Wednesday’s bike ride started at 9:07 AM as I rolled out the driveway on my Lynskey Helix bike. The route for today was the “Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd” with a side trip into Riverwalk. The previous rides on this route didn’t go there and averaged 36 miles. Today I rode 39.75 miles which was helped narrow the gap for YTD mileage between 2022 and 2021 to 3 miles. YTD for 2022 is 4,722 miles. I trail 2020 by 118 miles. This was the 3rd bike ride on this route this year. I rode 962.19 miles in June so far. I might reach 1000 miles if the rain doesn’t stop me tomorrow. Only one other month had more miles than June, April with 1,014.93.
Two dog sprints on the ride. The first came as I rode on Riverwalk Drive back to FM 1314 at the corner of Colorado Drive. A small black dog slithered under the fence and came running and yapping at me. I moved to the center of the road and sped up and the dog stopped after about a hundred feet. That one I saw coming as two dogs raced along the fence until the black one found a spot to go under. The second dog surprised me on Briar Berry Lane at Auburn Park Drive. I have not encountered a dog at that spot before. The dog was black and white and large springing out of the grass and running beside me barking. I yelled at him and pedaled faster and he stopped chasing me after 50 feet or so.
The wind was light from the NE and east with the temperature ranging from 85 to 92 and mostly cloudy. It didn’t feel as hot as it was a few days ago. The headwind was not bad and mostly riding SE on FM 1314 back from Gene Campbell Blvd. My legs were up to the challenge. I think the slightly easier gearing on the Lynskey helped. Weather conditions: start 84 (humidity 64%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind NE 5; finish 91 (humidity 49%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind E 8 mph. The ride ended at 12:08 PM.
According to the AXS.SRAM.com ride report I used the 33×13 gears for 2:15:20 (31.3 miles) out of the total moving time of 2:59:11. I only made 9 RD shifts.

I tweaked today’s bike route a little adding some side streets and taking a side trip on Farmingham Road to check out a store. That made the ride about 3 miles longer than usual. The bike ride began at 8:57 AM and finished at 11:43 AM. The route name is “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” going south and east biking 36.37 miles riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. In addition to the Farmingham Road side trip when I got to FM 2100 I rode south to Spanish Cove Drive and made a u-turn back to the north. I don’t usually do that. This ride raised my June total to 922.43 miles. So far in 2022 I biked this route 14 times and today was the most miles. Today was the earliest start time by 2 minutes.

There is a chance rain will come on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but today was sunny but mostly cloudy. The temperature didn’t get out of the 80’s by the time I finished and the humidity was low for the time of year. Weather conditions: start 80 (humidity 69%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind NE 10 mph; finish 89 (humidity 54%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph.
The video details the side trip on Farmingham Road and the ride through the road construction on FM 1960. Both confirmed my earlier thoughts. I also recorded a Strava top result on Farmingham Road: 3rd fastest time on Home Stretch (2:18)

When early pandemic lockdowns led to empty streets, Simms, a leader among Black BMX riders, catapulted himself to social media fame.
Brad Simms is sprinting toward the jumps. The freestyle pro and I are riding the mountain bike trails in Milton Reimers Ranch Park, about 45 minutes west of Austin. Specifically, a downhill “flow trail” with a sign extolling the dangers below: WARNING! SERIOUS INJURY IS POSSIBLE. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Simms rips around a berm, floats through a rhythm section on just his rear wheel, and playfully flicks his mountain bike up and over a shin-high limestone ledge. “You were going really fast!” I wheeze when I finally catch up to him. Simms smiles, “What’d you expect?”

Balfour Beatty, as part of Colorado River Constructors (CRC) joint venture team, successfully set the first bridge beams that support widening activities east of US 290 and SH 71 “Y” interchange in Austin, Texas on the $674m Oak Hill Parkway project
The 10 bridge beams were set in one night, set by cranes on bearing pads atop of previously constructed columns and caps. The next phase of the Oak Hill Parkway project will involve widening operations on Old Fredericksburg Road, which include installing permanent metal decking, forming bridge overhangs and setting rebar for future bridge decks and barriers.
The process will be repeated at Monterey Oaks Boulevard in the next few weeks. The Oak Hill Parkway project is scheduled for completion in 2026.
