About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 27: Johnson City to Austin, 2317’ of climbing, 2:30hrs in the saddle. The longest short day yet

Friday October 15, 2021, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 1,388 miles (2,234 km) The day started off as normal, rolling hills in the county side. Maddie had another flat (her 7th) on this trip! We all stopped to help her. Had a pinch flat which is rare, rim liner had slipped. We were warned about a low spot where the water ran over the road. It was right before a big downhill so I was going too fast when I hit the wet pavement and started to slide before getting under control. …

Day 28: layover day in Austin

Saturday October 16, 2021 I had a great day off. Slept in, walked to Denny’s for a real breakfast and to the Texas football stadium. Oklahoma State University, my alma mater, was playing today. Walked through all the crowds to find the ticket booth, very slow. While standing there, an older man asked if I needed tickets. He said he great seats for $75. I was Leary of him but went for it. As we walked in, he seemed to know everyone at every turn. He told me he …

Beautiful and treacherous course. Feel horrible I quit before the 3rd loop. Was pitch black and got pretty cold in the mountains. I would of finished around 4am. There’s some tough cookies here.

That was horrifying

The Dog Might Have Caught Me With That Headwind

Texbiker.net Posted on October 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 16, 2021

Cold temperature delayed the start of today’s bike ride to 9:23 AM. I wondered if I would see any other cyclists along the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route but I did see a few before finishing the ride at 12:00 PM. With the lower temperature a strong NE wind was on the route. The toughest part was riding east over Lake Houston. The fastest section was riding west over Lake Houston with a tailwind. I biked 32.22 miles pushing my week to 175.38 miles. I can still get a 200 mile week biking tomorrow. Hopefully the wind will let up some after church and the temperature warms up to the mid 70’s. This was the 10th time riding this route in 2021. YTD 2021 stands at 8,078 miles, 270 miles above 2020 YTD.

No side trip today to Bike Barn. I’m waiting for information about my Lazer helmet warranty request.

As I rode west on FM 1960 after crossing FM 2100 I was surprised by a dog growling and chasing me about 100 feet past the Chevron station. I can’t remember ever being chased by a dog there. I thought the dog might have caught me if I was riding into the wind.

FM 2100 southbound lanes between FM 1960 and Old Atascocita Road remains a work in progress. I rode on those lanes from Old Atascocita Road to just south of the railroad tracks in Huffman. The headwind was stiff there too.

Weather summary: start 62 (63% humidity, 50 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 16 mph gusts 24 mph; finish 71 (37% humidity, 43 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 22 mph gusts 31 mph.

Thursday October 14, 2021, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,358 miles (2,185 km) Rain and thunderstorms all night but it stopped in the morning. So glad we were able to put our sleeping bags in the rec room. It was very foggy with no sun for half the ride, which was great.

Two Years of Daily Bicycling: Simple, Not Easy

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Something kinda big just recently happened, and I forgot to blog about it. What with that fellow blogger guy coming to town and my big birthday ride (which I’ll get to another time, I reckon), I sort of overlooked a major milestone: two years of riding every single day! That’s somewhere upwards of 12,000 miles. By now, the mileage goals I’ve set and met are almost like literal mileposts on a highway. I pass them by, and they’re in the rearview mirror. Not forgotten, but I’ve seen them and moved on. I suppose that’s what we do here at A Dude Abikes. We keep on bikin’. (And walkin’ and doin’ yoga, and, well that’s mostly it for exercise.) Writing about my journey makes it more real somehow. And 731 days of riding is very real, rest assured. Hmm, some rest would …

Spring Creek Greenway and San Jacinto Bayou Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 15, 2021

I didn’t ride yesterday after the morning rain but no rain today. I was back on my Lynskey R300 to ride the Spring Creek Greenway to John Pundt Park. It began at 10:44 AM and finished at 2:14 PM. The greenway wasn’t busy with a few other cyclists passing me or me passing them. I rode 40.7 miles just barely the longest ride on the route so far in 2021. Missing yesterday put a dent in hitting 200 miles for the week with my total now up to 143.16 miles with 2 days left. A cool front is supposed to arrive this evening which might delay my early morning start tomorrow. 2 days to ride 57 miles is doable.

10-15-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
10-15-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

I noticed the new ICAN Cycling Alpha 50 rear wheel makes more noise when I am not pedaling than the Vision 30 wheel. The ratchet paws sound like a fishing reel bringing in a large fish. But I can live with it. I weighed the Lynskey with the new wheels and it is .8 of pound lighter than with the Vision 30 aluminum wheels and 700x32C tires.

At Pundt Park I stopped for about 15 minutes before heading back to the US59 trailhead. I took these photos.

  • 10-15-2021 Lynskey R300 at Pundt Park-1
10-15-2021 Lynskey R300 at Pundt Park
  • 10-15-2021 Lynskey R300 at Pundt Park-3
10-15-2021 Lynskey R300 at Pundt Park

Biking the greenway feels different from riding the streets and roads. The curves are frequent and some require slowing and then powering up. The climbing can be hard when it doesn’t seem like the trail is going up. No stops (for me anyway) means continuous pedaling. No stop signs or traffic lights for quick breaks.

Good news for the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway along Forest Cove Drive. A section waiting for concrete has been finished and the bridge is open. Now the question is when will the greenway extend to the west through Edgewater Park to US59/I-69? I noticed benches installed at several of the circles branching off the greenway since my last ride there.

Strava reported two personal records: 3rd fastest time on The Chute (1:25) and 3rd fastest time on Logan’s Run (3:39).
