With a time constraint today I rolled out on today’s bike ride at 8:55 AM. I chose a shorter route to fit the time heading south and east to E. Lake Houston Parkway on FM 1960. I call this my “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike. Finishing at 11:26 AM I biked 28.93 miles, the shortest ride so far this week. Saturday will make up for the short ride. After 4 bike rides this week the total is 156.52 miles. This was the 5th time biking today’s route. Today’s mileage fits the average for those rides. August now totals 851.62 miles surpassing my 800 mile goal.

Lots of blue sky for the bike ride. Wind was light but a headwind riding east over Lake Houston tested my legs. The return over Lake Houston had a light tailwind but I gladly took it. Overall weather conditions: start 84 (76% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph; finish 90 (61% humidity, 75.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 8 mph.
Early in the bike ride I encountered lots of traffic at Kingwood Park High School. This was the first time I ran into this since school started a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why today was different.
For some reason the GoPro MicroSD card recorded the video clips but I couldn’t access them. I used Recuva to get the files but the first clip was messed up. I wanted to try editing the video on my Acer Spin 713 Chromebook but reverted to my Windows 10 computer.
When I rode through Walden I stopped and talked with a church member working in his garage. Later on Pine Place Drive another biker passed me going the opposite direction. We exchanged hellos.

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — As riders inch closer and closer to the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred starting line, many are happy to finally gather on their bikes again.
“There’s been a lot of excitement I think everyone has been really excited to bring this back to a live-in-person event,†said Charlie Zamastil, Race Director for MSU cycling. …
VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KTEN) — Matthew Von Kleist is a 22-year-old living in Anna, but working at the Jack-in-the-Box in Van Alstyne.
He doesn’t have a car but has been determined to get to his shifts. Von Kliest walks 14 miles to and from work every day.
Van Alstyne Police Department has responded multiple times to calls of a man laying by the side of the highway as Von Kleist took frequent breaks in the heat.
"They would come and ask if I’m all right, and you know, if I need any medical attention or anything," Von Kleist said.
AUSTIN – TxDOT will host a virtual public meeting to gather input on the proposed improvements on RM 620 at Anderson Mill Road from south of Foundation Road to Little Elm Trail.
The $38 million project proposes to construct 2 to 3-lane frontage roads, an elevated bypass lane in each direction through the Anderson Mill Road and El Salido Parkway intersections and non-signalized.
U-turns at both intersections. RM 620 would be separated by a variable-width median, with curb and gutter. Bicycle and pedestrian paths are also included in the project.
The virtual public meeting will be available on TxDOT.gov, keyword search “620 Anderson Mill†beginning Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, at 10 a.m. The public may submit comments on the proposed improvements using any of the following methods: …
Where: Meet at Koffeteria Bakery, 1110 Hutchins St. #102, two blocks west of the Columbia Tap Rail Trail
Join BikeHouston, Stop TxDOT I-45 and EaDo Bike Co. on Saturday August 28 at 8 a.m. for a ride through East Downtown, 5th Ward, and the White Oak Bayou Greenway as we explore the neighborhoods and green spaces slotted for destruction if the I-45 expansion project, also known as the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP), were to be built as currently designed. On the ride, we’ll spend time discussing what safety and bikeway projects are needed to improve connectivity between EaDo, 5th Ward, and adjacent communities.
The I-45 expansion has been highly controversial and has garnered unprecedented levels of public engagement. After years of public meetings and deliberation, the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) will gather on August 31 to vote on its 10-year Unified Transportation Plan (UTP). This vote will determine how the state plans to move forward (or not) with the I-45 expansion, a vote that is critical to Houston’s transportation future. A vote in favor of the NHHIP signals that the state aims to maintain Houston’s car-dominant status-quo, choosing traffic over the things that make Houston great: our neighborhoods, our small businesses, and our quality of life.
This ride is being held in partnership with Stop TxDOT-I45 and EaDo Bike Co. …

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Earlier this month Landen Watson was playing near a church parking lot in College Station when his bike was stolen.
“I was over there, looking around to see if there were any turtles and when I got back up it was gone,†said Watson.
Watson’s mother, Gwynndolyn Ellis says the bike had just been replaced after his first one was stolen weeks prior.
“It upset me that someone would just take a kid’s bike,†said Ellis. " We instantly went out and tried to ride around and look for it. We didn’t have any luck so I thought to use our community Facebook pages to try and find the bike.â€
Ellis’ post caught the attention of Aggieland Power Washing owner, Robert Byrnes.

Midway through the week I backed off on the bike ride mileage. I biked far enough to secure my goal for August. It all began at 9:08 AM as I rolled away on my Lynskey R300 bike on my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. By the 11:55 AM finished I covered 34.79 miles. This was slightly below the average distance of the 11 times on today’s route so far in 2021. So far I biked 127.59 miles this week putting in position to hit 200 miles for the week. I wasn’t the only biker out today as 2 others crossed my path.

Starting at this time of day the temperature was 87 degrees and the humidity was 70%. It didn’t take long for the sweat to start flowing. Ice water from my CamelBak came in handy. Wind was just barely moving not providing much of a cooling effect. Weather conditions: start 87 (70% humidity, 75.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 5 mph; finish 90 (61% humidity, 74.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph.
I moved my new Lezyne rear light to the back of the seat bag to improve the visibility. I was concerned about it coming loose and looped the rubber seatpost band to the bag. Below the bag I think the light was partially blocked.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — School is back in session across the Coastal Bend which means the roadways are busy with drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Museum of North Texas History is recognizing the Hotter ‘N’ Hell bicycle race on its 40th anniversary.
The museum prepared a special exhibit for what has become one of the biggest annual events in Wichita Falls.
“We had been discussing it for several years with the Hotter ‘N’ Hell group and because this is the 40th anniversary, we wanted to do something to commemorate that special occasion,†said Madeleine Calcote, the museum’s director. “They loaned us the majority of the items that are in the exhibit, and we worked with them to get the …
HOUSTON – While COVID continues to dominate the headlines, Cancer remains a leading killer in the nation.
The National Cancer Institute estimates 1.8 million new cases of cancer in 2020 and more than 600,000 deaths. Mortality rates have dipped over the years, but every success includes a challenge, and one Houston woman will soon join more than 200 cyclists riding coast-to-coast to bring awareness and money to the fight.
After a couple of MS-150 charity rides, Harolynn Adeniran figured she had a …
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL)—We are now less than a week away from the 40th edition of the largest sanctioned bike ride in the nation, the Hotter’N Hell Hundred, and over the past 4 decades, Hotter’N Hell officials have seen many changes from that small inaugural ride.
From adding more and more cycling events and an ever-expanding consumer show to having to go completely virtual last year, Hotter’N Hell officials said one thing has remained the same, the support from Texoma.
“The first year, we were just going to do it for one year,†HH100 Chairman, Robie Christie said. …

Day 28
I found the town of Kirbyville, Texas, to be friendly just like the rest of the state. But it was also time to get started into Louisiana. I left the Gateway Motel early, with only an egg and cheese biscuit. The roads were mostly flat as I headed east on S.R. 383 to Bleakwood and then Bon Wier, where the only convenience store had recently been burned out. The Louisiana border once again didn’t have a Louisiana sign. Not surprising because the last time I was in the state, there was no entry sign then either. Texas didn’t have one either but did have a Texas shaped rock.
The roads were great in Louisiana, especially since I was on U.S. 190 with wide and smoother shoulders. Next came DeRidder, famous …
