About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lots of Sunshine, Other Bikers, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on August 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 21, 2021

Not as early of a start for a Saturday bike ride with my rolling out at 8:13 AM. I waited a little later because sunrise is later. Riding my Canyon Endurace bike I set out on the “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route hoping to see other bikers along the way. By the time I finished at 10:36 AM I saw more than recent bike rides on this route in some time. You can most of them in the video after I make the left turn onto FM 1960 to ride east over Lake Houston. Previous to that I saw two and later in Walden another biker passed me. I needed a little over 10 miles to hit 200 for the week and today’s 31.24 miles did that for a total of 221 mile for the week. Today’s route is one I ride frequently with this being the 18th time in 2021. August rides now total 695.1 miles leaving 105 miles to reach my goal for the month. 2021 YTD miles stand at 6,483 which is 162 miles higher than 2020.

8-21-2021 Bike Rides Summary week ending 8-22-2021

Starting just after 8 AM the humidity was 99% but the wind was calm. Two factors for a muggy bike ride. Fortunately as the ride progressed the humidity went down and some wind arrived, but not too much. Beginning and ending weather: start 76 (99% humidity, 75.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm; finish 88 (68% humidity, 75.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

The legs felt good today. I held a good pace crossing Lake Houston which can be difficult at times when the wind is high. The Canyon is riding quietly after waxing the chain and applying grease to the thru axles. Not sure if the grease really helped.

Bye, Bye Rain, Hello Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on August 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumAugust 20, 2021

A turn in the weather for today’s bike ride. Rain percentage dropped below 10% and the forecasted high is in the mid to upper 90’s. I started at 9:06 AM, about an hour earlier than yesterday. In a bid for some route variety I put together some roads I ride from time to time but not in this combination. This required a new route name, “Community Drive – Valley Ranch – Gene Campbell Blvd”. With a new combination of roads I wasn’t sure how far the ride would be guessing 32 to 33 miles. It turned out to be 34.48 miles. Those miles pushed my week to 189.76 miles. Tomorrow’s bike ride should make a 200+ mile week. My August mileage is at 663.86 miles, 137 miles to my 800 mile goal. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike putting the odometer to 23927.6 miles. 2021 YTD miles expanded the difference to 2020 TD miles to 131 miles. Last year I was in the hospital August 18th through the 21st.

I was ready for the probability of rain fall. Biking with the threat of rain is not my preference. Starting an hour earlier helped me finish the bike ride at 11:49 AM before the temperature got close to the maximum forecasted. Ride conditions: start 85 (82% humidity, 78.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 4 mph; finish 91 (62% humidity, 75.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph.

The long uninterrupted NW stretch on FM 1314 to Gene Campbell Blvd. allowed me to set a good pace improving my overall average speed to 14.3 mph. I expected a headwind when I made the u-turn at Gene Campbell Blvd. riding to the SE. There was a headwind but whenever the trees were close to the road they blocked most of the wind and I could keep the same pace maintaining my average speed. This screenshot from Golden Cheetah shows the charts for several markers.
