About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Preparing for Burleson, TX 67 Mile Bike Ride

Alberto Guerrero | www.youtube.com

Preparing for this 67-mile Bike Ride to be held on May 25, 2024, in Burleson, Texas, which is inching closer and closer, and it is becoming a stark reality of just how difficult it is going to be to complete the 67 miles. As an untrained and novice rider, I am learning a lot about myself, nutrition, and my body’s abilities. I also have a whole new perspective for the sport of cycling because I am learning that it is not just about the physical capabilities of the athlete but it is an art form in itself regarding body positioning, bike fit, and the science in knowing how to keep the body properly fueled throughout a ride to maintain endurance and constant pedaling.

South And East Altered Route. Tiny Wire Rear Flat Tire, Again!

Texbiker.net Posted on March 23, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 23, 2024

I rode south and east on today’s bike ride as I have on all outside rides this week. I’ll use the route name Atascocita – Huffman – Walden but I left some streets out and added some in. Elm Grove, Sherwood Trails and North Woodland Hills didn’t see me at the start but at the end I rode through Elm Grove Village. On the way back I took side streets from Pinehurst Trail Drive to get to the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail biking east to west getting a Strava 2nd fastest time on Amateur Hour (2:31). Not too long ago I rode west to east on the trail. After reclaiming the Strava Local Legend on Kings Crossing North (1:49) I biked north along W. Lake Houston Parkway to Northpark Drive which I haven’t done in many months or more. I started at 11:36 AM after watching the Volta a Catalunya and Settimana Coppi e Bartali races while waiting for it to warm up a little more. I finished at 2:45 PM.

I might’ve finished sooner but at 24.6 miles on Pinehurst Trail Drive I stopped to fix a rear tire flat. This is the same tire that has had flat problems over the last month or so. A few days ago I installed a new tube and all was well until today. The culprit was a very tiny piece of wire stuck in the tire piercing the tube about 8 inches from the valve stem. For some reason I spotted the hole in the tube quickly, applied and adhesive patch, put the tube back in the tire. This took about 35 minutes, not an Indy 500 pit stop time. The path held all the way home. I’ll check the tire to see if the patch holds. Two people in cars stopped to ask if I needed help and I thanked them. A cyclist dressed in an LSU kit stopped too. We chatted about flat tires and he told me he was riding the Tour de Rouge in May. He rode it last year.

Weather: Start 68 degrees, humidity 68%, dew point 57.5, a few clouds, wind NE 8 mph; Finish 76 degrees, humidity 51%, dew point 56.6, partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph.

Kiwanis Club’s Riverside Ride, Kidzfest returns this weekend

Kyle R. Cotton | www.victoriaadvocate.com

Kiwanis Club of Victoria returns this weekend with one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, Riverside Ride and Kidzfest, Saturday morning at Riverside Stadium.

The family event of 16 years invites people to ride their bikes to support the local nonprofit with Kidzfest, an event meant for the whole family.

“It’s just been a really fun way for the Kiwanis Club of Victoria to be able to fundraise for part of it, but it also raises awareness for our organization and other organizations that we partner with who serve children and are interested in children’s development,” event organizer Shannon Longoria said. …

Good things coming to King’s Gate Park

By Rick Mauch | www.community-news.com

King’s Gate Park now belongs to the City of Willow Park and big things lie ahead for the 22-and-a-half acres city officials call a gem.

Topping the list is a fundraising narrative by the nonprofit Weatherford Mountain Bike Club to raise $16,500 for the construction of a kids mountain bike skills area and trail called Trinity Track. It will have berms, an armored trail, bridges and other trail elements suitable for children and beginners.

Using rock to armor or pave the trail is an alternative that hardens the tread while being more friendly to mountain bikes on multi-use trails. A berm is compacted soil, loose gravel, stone, or crushed rock that intercepts and diverts storm water runoff.

In addition, 3,000-plus linear feet of singletrack trail will be constructed on the park property to help beginners progress to riding more difficult mountain bike trails. …

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Alzheimer’s Disease affects many older Americans, and El Paso is considered an area of concern for Alzheimer’s risk. Plenty of research and support is underway, including here in El Paso.

Funding is an important part of learning and trying to treat the disease, and that’s why the Alzheimer’s Association is sponsoring the “Ride to End ALZ.”

Pedal Power: Conquering the Breezy Challenge Back From Stroker Road

Texbiker.net Posted on March 22, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMarch 22, 2024

Continued the week’s bike rides south and east on the Atascocita – Walden – Stroker Road route. This is a slightly longer version of the Atascocita – Walden – Indian Shores Road route. It’s close enough for Strava to consider the routes as matches. Rolled out at 12:15 PM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and finished at 3:20 PM. Getting to Stroker Road mostly was with the wind and the ride back was into the wind. The hardest wind sections: north on FM2100, west on FM1960, crossing Lake Houston riding west, and north on W. Lake Houston Parkway over the river. At the start the wind was a modest 10 mph but sometime during the ride it increased to 13 mph with 24 mph gusts from the NW. My legs got a workout. Nice to see some sun.

Weather: Start 71 degrees, humidity 75%, dew point 62.5, overcast, wind NW 10 mph; Finish 75 degrees, humidity 59%, dew point 60.0, a few clouds, wind NW 13 mph gusts 24 mph.

Today’s 40.18 miles got me within 124 miles of my 680 mile goal for March.

On the way back I stopped on Atascocita Shores Drive and took these photos.
