About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

One Year After Near-Death Crash, Activist Hosts ‘Cyclist Lives Matter’

Iris Dimmick | therivardreport.com

This time last year, Samantha Flores was in a coma. When she woke up days later, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever ride a bike again after a hit-and-run left her in the hospital with critical injuries. But on Friday, Flores led a group of about 30 cyclists on a 9-mile route from the location of the hit-and-run south toward downtown.

She organized the ride and festival, called “Cyclist Lives Matter,” to promote traffic safety, memorialize cyclists that have lost their lives on the road, and bring attention to a …

Frisco’s new Hike and Bike Master Plan advocates for more on-street bicycle lanes, routes

By Lindsey Juarez Monsivais | communityimpact.com

Frisco’s newly updated Hike and Bike Master Plan could pave the way for more on-street bicycle lanes and routes. Frisco City Council approved the updated 20-year plan in August, more than 10 years after the plan was originally adopted. The new Hike and Bike Master Plan adds more proposed bike lanes and routes throughout the city in an effort to create better connectivity to Frisco’s existing trail network.

These changes will likely not happen immediately. Most new trails will happen in conjunction with new development, …

A Short Taste of Fall Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 7, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 7, 2019

Rolling out at 8:23 AM to start today’s bike ride it felt almost fall like. The temperature was 74 degrees but it climb higher as the sun got higher in the sky. To see other cyclists I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route going south and east. I rode 35.14 miles putting the week’s total at 104.42 miles, 15% of the way to my 700 mile goal for September.

Weather while I rode: 74 (96% humidity, 72.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 92 (59% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. The arm sleeves came in handy for the first couple of miles until I warmed up.

The video summarizes most of the other cyclists along the route.

Yesterday I went to Walmart and bought a bigger capacity MicroSD card for my GoPro camera. Now I can record up to 4 hours in 1080P if the battery will last that long.

I finished the ride at 11:13 AM, a few minutes before I started yesterday’s ride. It was starting to warm up as I pulled into the driveway.

As I go through the next few days biking will take a back seat. My wife’s funeral is Tuesday and family arrive on Sunday. Maybe I will ride again next Thursday.

Build a NEW TRAIL @ City park

by Kent Browning | www.meetup.com

Austin Ridge Riders and the motorcycle folks are building a NEW Trail on the the Motorcycle Trail at City Park. OK its actually an old trail we have permission to open up again. Most mountain bikers never used the old trail it is all new to us. We have marked and cleared the entire corridor so it is rideable now. We need to open up the tight spots and start working the tread.

What we’ll do …

Local bicycling icon Fred Meredith passed away in April 2019

MichaelBluejay | bicycleaustin.info

This is dated but it’s the first I’ve heard of it. Many of you knew or knew of Fred Meredith, whose bicycle advocacy was broad and deep. He was one of the very first members of this forum back in 1993 when it started as a Critical Mass email list, and was one of its most prolific contributors. He was also an all-around great guy, I never hear anyone have a bad word for him. He will be sorely missed.

Project Gridlock: Austin falling short on bike safety, ridership goals

by Melanie Torre and Mario Pena | cbsaustin.com

Nearly five years ago the City of Austin made big promises to improve bicycling. A major step includes the $216 million 2014 Bicycle Plan that aims to create an "all ages and abilities" network of bicycle lanes throughout the entire city.

The goal is for anyone of any age to feel safe getting anywhere by bicycle. However, millions of dollars and dozens of miles later, the percentage of citywide commuters traveling by bike isn’t budging.

Every day Kathryn Flowers …

From the Chair of the Bicycle Advisory Committee

houstonbikeplan.org

The work to improve the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians is an active priority for the City of Houston. The Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) offers condolences to the families and communities of the people who died in fatal crashes while bicycling. Crashes have killed eight people riding bicycles in 2019.

On August 13, 2019, Mayor Sylvester Turner signed an executive order to implement Vision Zero, a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all in Houston by 2030. In 2018, the BAC recommended that Vision Zero be implemented as a way to centralize safe mobility initiatives regardless of …

Wobbly Table, Heat Exposure Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 6, 2019

A wobbly breakfast table held me up from starting today’s bike ride until the temperature got hot. I left home at 11:14 AM to ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for a total of 36.00 miles. The table finally bugged enough to try and figure out why it wobble whenever someone leaned down on one end. I tightened two loose bolts but the wobble was still there. Then I took the leaf out and saw a split in some wood allowing the top to move up and down. Elmer’s glue into the crack and maybe that will fix it.

Weather during the bike ride: start 93 (55% humidity, 74.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 8 mph. Finish 98 (35% humidity, 66.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph. Thanks to the lower humidity the heat didn’t feel so intense but I knew it was hot.

Yesterday when I was out driving I discovered the detour on the I-69/US59 north bound frontage road was no longer in place. So today I returned to my usual riding route and stayed on the frontage road when I crossed FM 1314. The entrance to Community Drive now comes before going up the incline. I show this in the video. This takes out one of the climbs riding up to the traffic lights at the Grand Parkway intersection.

I stopped at the New Caney Mobil station for ice and water and then in Porter I stopped at the Circle K at FM 1314 for a x-Large Polar Pop Fruit Punch PowerAde. I sat out by the pumps in the shade drinking the PowerAde. It took extra effort to get up and get ready to go out into the sun to continue the ride.

My timing was such that I avoided school dismissal traffic at every school along the route. I finished the ride at 2:26 PM, an hour and 11 minutes later than yesterday’s ride exposing me to more heat.

Saturday I plan on starting much earlier.
