About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The victim’s body was lying in the 4800 block of Belvedere near the damaged bicycle. The crash was initially reported at 3:30 p.m., police said.

No other information was available Tuesday afternoon. Drivers are asked to avoid the area. It’s unclear whether the incident was a hit-and-run.

Meet the Houston man who gives out free bicycles

Craig Hlavaty | www.houstonchronicle.com

Lifelong Houstonian and bicycle enthusiast Ferrell Surette has spent his entire 52 years in this city around bicycles. Five years ago, he found a way to make sure that kids in Houston could have that same chance.

Bicycles mean many things to many people. For a person in need of transportation a bicycle means freedom, maybe even employment opportunities. For some it’s a means to unlock parts of the city to that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to explore with a car. For others it’s a means of …

Still Hot, Leaning Pickup Truck, Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 13, 2019

I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for today’s bike ride and rode 35.16 miles. I think I will be able to ride 6 days this week so I don’t need to make up for a missed day and still ride 200+ miles. So far I biked 70.7 miles this week and 382.85 miles this month or 48% of my 800 mile goal.

It wasn’t quite as hot while I was out on the roads. Weather during the ride: start 95 (61% humidity, 79.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 95 (51% humidity, 74.2 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Start time was 11:12 AM and finished at 1:57 PM putting me out during prime heat time.

I stopped for water and ice twice: Chevron store on FM 1960 and Astacocita Shores Drive and the McDonald’s in Kingwood’s Town Center. At the McDonald’s an old white Toyota pickup leaned severely to the driver’s front with a broken axle. There was a note on the dash probably explaining what the driver planned but I didn’t stop to read it. The pickup was an obstacle for other cars to go into the drive through lanes.

Recap video of the bike ride using the GoPro Quik app.

Strava tells me this ride was easier than my usual effort and I agree as I took it easy after I left FM 1960 west at Pinehurst Trail Drive headed north back to Kingwood.

Tips on getting students to and from school safely

by Jessica Gonzalez | kfixtv.com

EL PASO, Texas — Now that most kids are back in school, something working parents have to think about and plan for is how they’ll get to and from school.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a child is ready to start walking to school at ages 9 to 11. Parents are advised to go over their walking route several times before the first day of school. …

… BIKING

— Practice the bike route to school before the first day of school to make sure your child can manage it. — Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride. — Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic and ride in bike lanes if they are present. — Use appropriate hand signals. — Respect traffic lights and stop signs. — Wear bright-colored clothing to increase visibility. White or light-colored clothing and reflective gear is especially important after dark. — Know the "rules of the road." …

Surprise, No Detour Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 12, 2019

The hot weather continued for today’s bike ride. I started at 10:58 AM to bike the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I cut back the mileage from, last week’s rides logging 35.54 miles today. I took Sunday off for rest but today’s miles add to August total of 347.69 miles, 43% of the way to my 800 mile goal. I finished the ride at 2:00 PM.

Weather while I was on the ride: start 95 (62% humidity, 79.9 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 98 (48% humidity, 74.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 6 mph. Supposedly the high temperatures will taper off after Tuesday as the high pressure moves out of the Houston area. When I stopped at the Circle K store in Porter at FM 1314 I bought a Fruit Punch PowerAde and went out to the pumps to drink it. Sitting in the shade with the breeze blowing through it didn’t feel that hot. The ice cold drink tasted good as a break from the blue PowerAde. I also stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. for ice and water before biking back to I-69/US59.

I was surprised as I rode north on Loop 494 approaching Community Drive and the Grand Parkway construction. The detour I expected to be in place for several months was gone and I stayed on Loop 494.

The video shows some of the roads and scenery along the route. I edited with Adobe Premier Elements instead of the GoPro QuikStory app on my phone.
