About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

MS150 2019: I am really up for this?

Lisa Doggett | www.lisadoggett.com

After months of training – 6 a.m. spin classes at the YMCA, long rides on the Southern Walnut Creek Trail, and the recent LBJ 100 ride in the Texas Hill Country – I am going to do it again: 168 miles from Houston to Austin during the last weekend of April. This will be my second time participating in the MS150, and for much of the time leading up to it, I’ve been feeling fine: I got this! But….

Now, as the weekend approaches, I am getting scared. Am I really up for this? I was in better shape last year. Even though I didn’t decide to ride until five weeks before the race last time, I was running long distances and working …

Azzi’s Ride: A mother’s cross-country bike journey for preeclampsia awareness

By: Todd Bailey | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — "We don’t really get to feel like parents because we were only with him for three days."

Three days. That’s how long Carlie and Dietrich Linde got to spend with their late son Azzi who died from preeclamsia complications during pregnancy.

It’s heartbreaking, Carlie says.

Last summer in late June, Carlie noticed …

Liberty Freedom bike ride dodges wicked weather

By David Taylor | www.chron.com

In his second year, Joshua Tully of Daisetta upped his game by doing the longer 30-mile ride. He found a friend, Rick Chandler of Humble, who partnered up with him and kept an eye on him throughout the ride.

A little rain, no problem. His rain coat was neatly packed away in his backpack.

“Not even wet,” Nestor Barroeta of Lumberton proclaimed as he held out the slicker. The rest of him was soaked, but he didn’t even care.

“I did the ride the first year and it was fun.” He skipped last year because he feared the inclement weather but decided not to let it bother him this year.

“It’s a pretty ride out here,” he said.

Nearly 60 riders braved the …

Bandera Bike Park

By Seths Pool | austinmountainbiking.com

Hey everyone, just wanted to take a minute to talk about Bandera Bike Park. Lots of trail work happening there, and the place needs everyone’s support to make it into something great for the Texas mountain biking scene! the place has great potential, but seems to have a tarnished reputation/history within the Texas riding community.

Building a bike park and multiple trails to satisfy everyone is a GIANT undertaking. lots of labor, time, and money have already been invested to bring Bandera Bike park to where it currently stands. Myself, and the Bandera Dig crew have been working hard recently to add new trails to the park for all of you! here is a map of Bandera Bike park. as of this last weekend, ive designed 6 new trails at …

Red Blooms, 21 MPH Wind, 79 Degrees Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 15, 2019

Today I biked what I label the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route which is a north – south which worked well with the strong wind. Starting at 11:19 AM the ride to Tavola was easier than the return trip. I rode 36.54 miles.

Weather during the ride: start 75 (52% humidity), a few clouds, wind S 15 mph. Finish 79 (48% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph gusts 21 mph. Because it warmed up some I reduced my attire to shorts, heavy long sleeve jersey topped with my University of Cincinnati short sleeve jersey. This worked well and kept me comfortable even when the 21 mph gusts hit me while I was in the shade.

When I got to FM 1485 on Loop 494 TXDot was working on the ditch beside the southbound lane reducing the traffic to one lane with a flagman. This backup the traffic at the traffic light where FM 1485 crosses the railroad tracks and took several minutes for north bound traffic to move.

While biking through Tavola the blooming flowers caught my eye and I took these photos.

Biking in the headwind on the way south from Tavola was tough but I managed to hold my average speed at 14.1 mph most of the time until I reached Kings Manor when it dropped. I passed all of the schools before the traffic arrived and finished the ride at 2:08 PM.

Tuesday’s weather looks favorable for biking so I will be on the Canyon.

Blue Sky, 25 MPH Gusts and 70 Degrees Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 14, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 14, 2019

After not biking on Saturday due to the threat of rain I got back on the bike today after church. Starting the ride at 12:28 PM I headed out on what I label the “Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. I altered the route slightly to add a couple of miles to it and rode 29.13 miles. This put the week at 196.04 miles (I should’ve rode 5 miles yesterday to get over 200) and the month at 352.08 miles, 59% of my goal for April.

Weather today was different from Saturday. Wind and blue sky greeted me as I rode the route. Weather during the ride: start 65 (48% humidity), fair, wind NW 14 mph gusts 25 mph. Finish 70 (40% humidity), fair, wind NW 20 mph. With the cool temperature at the start I chose to bundle up some with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, wind jacket, and regular gloves. I figured by the time I finished the temperature would get close to the forecasted high of 72. The strong wind challenged me whenever I rode W to NW and I was thankful for the wind jacket.

Once I got in Valley Ranch I knew the headwind would end as soon as I turned to the east and then south along I-69/US59. Then I picked up my speed and boosted my average speed to 14.2 mph after battling the wind. My legs were fresh from the day off and powered me along to finish the ride at 2:43 PM.

Yesterday I did some maintenance on the Canyon waxing the chain and cleaning the bike. I checked the tires and found out the front tire has 6417 miles and the rear 6800 miles. After today’s ride the Canyon Endurace CF SLX has 8901 miles.

Monday the temperature should get close to 80 and the wind let up some with sunny sky. Sounds like perfect riding weather.
