About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: More funding for new bike lanes around El Paso

By: Shelby Kapp | www.ktsm.com

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Paso has an avid cycling community, but not quite the desired infrastructure.

New capital funding will pay for the design which includes buffered bike lanes, which provides striping to separate them from traffic lanes.

You can also expect conventional bicycle lanes, bicycle boulevards, shared and protected lanes. The …

Left Turn Headwind Whammy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 17, 2019

I was sailing right along until I made the left turn from Gene Campbell Blvd onto FM 1314. Then Wham! The SE 20 mph headwind hit me and my leg power dropped off a cliff. This happened while I rode the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route today. I started riding at 11:38 AM after watching a race in Belgium on Flobikes. com.

Up to the 20 mile point when I made that turn onto FM 1314 the wind was my friend helping build up my average speed to 14.2 mph but on FM 1314 it slowly dropped down and by the end of the ride at 2:29 PM it was 13.3 mph. While getting the average speed to 14.2 I rode at 17 to 19 mph to overcome the slow speeds as I exit Kingwood and get to I-69/US59.

The blue sky from Tuesday disappeared to be replaced by an overcast sky as we prepare for rain late tonight and into Thursday. Weather while I biked: start 76 (84% humidity), overcast, wind S 16 mph. Finish 75 (85% humidity), overcast, wind SE 20 MPH. I swapped a regular long sleeve jersey for the thermal one I wore yesterday and kept the wind jacket above my shorts. I was comfortable even when I had the headwind and at the finish the jacket and jersey were wet from all of the sweat.

Thursday’ weather looks wet but it might dry out after noon so a bike ride might happen.

City finds bike lane solution, moves toward bond election

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe | www.dentonrc.com

Denton city leaders moved two balls down the field Tuesday afternoon, steering the staff toward a solution for a congested part of West Hickory Street and toward a $200 million bond election this fall.

Neither move the Denton City Council made during its work session will be its last on either topic, particularly the bond election. But the city staff is taking steps to execute both plans in the coming months. …

Tour de Braz draws hundreds

Joshua Truksa | www.alvinsun.net

Once again, people from across the Houston area flocked to Alvin to take part in the annual Tour de Braz bike ride. Foreboding weather forecasts couldn’t keep determined cyclists away, and the gamble paid off. Though cloudy, the riders stayed dry into the afternoon and beat the storms that television stations ominously displayed in the morning making their way from Austin and San Antonio. Organizers of the race canceled the 100-mile route of the ride for fears that …

City Park Direction Change In Progress

By zrx24 | austinmountainbiking.com

As mentioned a few weeks ago in the City Park Trail Conditions thread, the City approved our getting back to our old ways of reversing trail direction every few years. I’ve begun changing directional signage on the upper loop this afternoon, and should have the rest of the trail finished tomorrow.

If you’re riding there tomorrow, the direction is still counter-clockwise. But you will encounter some Wrong Way markers and see that the directional signage has been changed in places (tree hangers for example). DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING BACK. …

Bike auction revenue doubled from 2011–16

When Will The Wind Let Up Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 16, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 16, 2019

I thought today’s bike ride wouldn’t be so windy but not the case. When I set on the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route I looked at the NWAA app on my phone and saw the wind was from the south at 15 mph. Since this route goes south that meant a headwind until the last 10 miles when it probably would become a tailwind. I left at 10:22 AM which is early for me so far this year. Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (69% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 15 mph. Finish 77 (65% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 17 mph, gusts 23 mph.

With the strong wind I dressed for a chill with shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey, and wind jacket. In the beginning I felt a little cool but as I warmed up that passed and I was comfortable for the rest of the bike ride. I am ready for warmer weather so I can skip the thermal jersey and jacket.

Whenever I rode in the open I knew the wind had picked up from the 15 mph at the start. Only after I finished the ride at 12:32 PM and checked the NWAA app again did I see how much the wind increased. This explained why it require so much effort riding into the headwind.

Maybe Wednesday the wind will let up. The weather will change Wednesday evening when another front moves through but I should be able to ride during the day. I thought April was known for showers, not strong winds.
