About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Motorists and cyclists should share our Texas roads safely

Eagle Editorial Board | www.theeagle.com

An avid cyclist, Kenneth Spence was a familiar sight in the area, riding his bike throughout the area.

When the 47 year old got on his bicycle on Jan. 4, little did he know it would be for the last time. Around 4 p.m. that day, as he rode northbound on the Texas 6 feeder road near the Peach Creek Cutoff, Spence was struck from behind by a car whose driver who said he was blinded by the sun. He died at a local hospital a few hours later. …

A group of cyclists headed out on Saturday morning to take a look at Brownsville on two wheels instead of four.

The 6-mile ride was spearheaded by Brownsville Commissioner At-Large “B” Rose Gowen. It took riders from the Chamber of Commerce through Texas Southmost College, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and …

Better Than 2018, 3 Hot Blooded Cyclists Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 12, 2019

Rain arrived around 10 pm Friday and moved through like the forecast called for. By this morning the streets dried out and I began the bike ride at 11:39 am. I selected the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route and rode 28.72 miles increasing January to 164.34 miles, 14 miles more than I biked the whole month in 2018. Last year I failed to reach my 300 mile goal for January; the only month I missed until December.

Weather during the bike ride today: start 65 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NW 12. Finish 66 (52% humidity), a few clouds, wind W 10 mph. I dressed for the wind chill with shorts, leg warmers, short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve thermal jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves from the start this time. I saw three other cyclists on FM 1960 over Lake Houston and they were dressed like it was summer: shorts with short sleeve jerseys. Apparently their blood was warmer than mine. The wind chill still made it through my wardrobe but not enough to feel uncomfortable.

When I reached Fairlake Drive on the east side of Lake Houston I stopped and took this photo of the bridge closed warning.

Bike Ride Fairlake Drive Bridge Closed

Making the turn a round at E. lake Houston Parkway the headwind accompanied me all the way to the 1:55 pm finish back home.

Average speed at this time of the year is not very good and today I managed 13.1 mph. Average power was 118 watts, max power 402 watts. Heart rate averaged 127 bpm, max was 147 bpm.

An unusual thing happened while I rode on through Atascocita on the way back with the heading going blank on the Wahoo Elemnt until I turned onto W. Lake Houston Parkway. It was like the GPS satellite was blocked. On the ride map that area shows as a straight line even though the streets curve around. Hopefully this was a one time thing.

Sunday through Tuesday weather looks like it will be colder than my 60 degree biking threshold but Wednesday looks hopeful.

City of Lubbock Councilman Jeff Griffith said it’s a top priority to ensure the safety of residents.

Fort Worth Bike Sharing racks up strong numbers in 2018

fortworthtexas.gov

Fort Worth Bike Sharing continues to roll up impressive numbers as it expands its network.

Some 2018 statistics for the program:

43,236 trips. 230,241 miles. 218,272 estimated carbon offsets. (A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhere.) 9.1 million estimated calories burned. Currently there are 46 stations in the system, and 350 bicycles.

50 Recovery miles total today. I have ridden this park over 100 times and never visited "The Bridge"!
