About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Longest Bike Ride So Far in 2019

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2019

Today’s bike ride is the longest one so far this young year at 34.42 miles. I rode what I label the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route going north from Kingwood. After today my January total stands 135.63 miles headed towards my 300 mile goal.

Setting out at 11:53 am the weather was sunny but chilly. I bundled up wearing shorts, leg warmers, short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve thermal jersey topped with a windbreaker jacket. I decided to wear half finger gloves but as I circled back close to home I stopped and switched to full finger gloves. Between the chilly wind and shade my fingers got cold.

Weather during the bike ride: start 63 (57% humidity), a few clouds, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 67 (58% humidity), a few clouds, wind SE 17 mph. The wind amplified the coolness and I was glad I chose the wardrobe.

I stopped in Woodridge Forest where I saw five or six homes under various stages of construction and remembered a few months ago there was grass and weed on those lots. Photos show the work going on.

Riding north the wind was helping me set a nice pace. At times when I turned into the wind I knew the ride back south could be harder. I want to get miles in to build my base fitness after being off the bike so long. Average power was 131 watts with the max coming in at 448 watts. Average heart rate 138 bpm and a max of 165 bpm. When I finished both jerseys were soaked from the work.

In Tavola a new area opened since my last ride there so I went to see where the streets were. One model home is near completion and dump trucks are hauling dirt in to raise the lots. One was stuck in the mud and a bulldozer hitched on to pull him free.

The biking back home to from Tavola wasn’t quite as tough as I expected with the wind direction coming from my left shoulder rather than straight on. I finished the ride at 2:40 pm before schools let out.

Later tonight a front will arrive with some rain so I don’t know what Saturday will hold but if it clears like the forecast says I may be able to ride around noon.

I’ve been reflecting alot about my third mega-mileage year in a row, since I’m seeming to continue a daily amount of bicycling and walking. 5,143 Miles in 2018: 4,554 Biking + 589 Walking. Pretty, Pretty, Pretty Good for A Dude! I haven’t added or subtracted any New Year’s Resolutions, so I’m wondering if it’s still healthy for me. Mountain Biking Texas

mbaction.com

We had really never thought a whole lot about mountain biking in Texas until national marathon champ Payson McElveen told us that Texas was where he began his mountain biking career. Although he now lives in Durango, Colorado, which has long been known to be one of the best towns for mountain biking in America, Payson got us interested in the mountain biking in Texas, so we decided to look into the matter a little further.

It appears that we underestimated the mountain bike scene in the Lone Star State. It turns out that Texas has hundreds of well-known trails, several mountain bike organizations, and a large number of enthusiastic riders and …

Giving ‘back’ to the community: Chiropractor in The Woodlands donates services to veterans

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The hip bone’s connected to the back bone, the back bone’s connected to the neck bone, the neck bone’s connected to the head bone.

Dem Bones is a childhood song we all remember, but the point is, things often connect for the greater good.

For example, Dr. Todd E. Hatch of Sunrise Chiropractic Group connected to the MS150, which connected him to the Wounded Warrior Project, which then connected to the creation of the Wounded Warriors Volunteer Association.

Some 10 years ago, Hatch was on an MS150 bicycle ride from Houston to Austin when he came across riders representing the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans. …
