About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dredging Sand From San Jacinto River Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 17, 2019

After running some errands on Wednesday my plan was to go for a bike ride. That didn’t happen because while I ran the errands it started misting rain and didn’t stop until late last night.

Fast forward to day and the mist is gone, some clouds remained as I started getting ready to ride and by the time I left at 12:35 pm some sun broke through the clouds. While it wasn’t quite as warm as the forecast said 65 degrees and the appropriate amount of clothing made for a pleasant bike ride. The wardrobe for today’s bike ride: shorts, leg warmers, short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve thermal jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves. For the first 15 minutes I felt chilly but the body heat kicked in I became comfortable.

I chose the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 32.37 miles boosting January to 196.71 miles, 104 miles away from my goal of 300 miles. I saw two other cyclists during the ride: first on Pinehurst Trail on the way back to Kingwood and the second at Kingwood Drive across from Fuddruckers.

On the way back to Kingwood while crossing the San Jacinto River I stopped and took these photos of the dredging crew and boat removing sand from Hurricane Harvey.

  • Bike Ride W Lake Houston Parkway Dredging
  • Bike Ride W Lake Houston Parkway Dredging
  • Bike Ride W Lake Houston Parkway Dredging

The dredging plan increases the flow capacity of the river when heavy rain visits to lessen the flooding.

Average power for the ride: 116 watts, max power 347 watts. Average heart rate 132 bpm, max heart rate 156 bpm. With the wind not much of factor during the ride I kept a good pace with those numbers.

Friday should be warmer (70’s) before a cold front arrives around noon on Saturday. I plan on biking Friday and stay inside on Saturday.

No, Pros Won’t Ruin Gravel Racing

Joe Lindsey | www.outsideonline.com

Probably. The good news is the culture of the sport—lauded for its grassroots, oddball vibe—will be defined by its community. Roadies ruin everything.

Just take mountain bike racing. Cross-country racing in the 1980s and early ’90s was a pretty fun, freewheeling affair until the money arrived and, with it, refugees from the Eurocentric pro road scene. Courses changed, tactics changed, and the whole sport got More Serious. You could argue that the roadification was complete not long after the sport gained Olympic status in 1996. …

Gravel Sportives Are Here, and They Might Be the Best Kind of Cycling Event

BY GLORIA LIU | www.bicycling.com

It’s no secret that participation in road racing is on the decline. USA Cycling memberships have been trending flat to downward since 2012, and there are fewer pure road races on the calendar overall. It’s also no secret that in their wake, mass-start events like gran fondos and gravel races have thrived. …

Ski-style chair lift, web of challenging trails make Spider Mountain a Texas trail-biking destination

The trails include 350 feet of vertical paths, downhill flow trails and technical trails with bridges, berms and jumps. (Not into biking? Scenic rides are available.) Snow not included, but tuck into adjacent Thunderbird Lodge and Event Center for some après-cycle relaxation. …

Local veteran presented with tandem bicycle

By: Anna Gutierrez | www.bigspringherald.com

BIG SPRING, TX – As we have all seen and heard, our military veterans face many challenges and can experience many hardships once they leave the service and try to work their way back to a civilian lifestyle. Unfortunately, this was the case for Jeremy Blount. Jeremy was in the military for several years, but when he left the service, he says he felt lost and …

W 5th Street: Bye bye buffered bike lane, hello bus lane

owlman | bicycleaustin.info

owlman wrote: "The new lane on 5th Street west of MoPac is similar to the bus-priority lanes on Guadalupe and Lavaca Streets. Working with Cap Metro, the Austin Transportation Department is converting a bike lane that ran all the way to Lamar Blvd into a dedicated bus & bike lane for a half-mile section between West Lynn and Baylor Streets."

That seems pretty nice. Bus/Bike/RTO lanes work well and are pretty comfortable to ride in. Few bicycling "facilities" change my usual ways to get to and fro, but I started riding Guadalupe instead of Congress to go south from downtown and have been glad for the way that is laid out mostly.

I noted this bonus from one of the links you provided — "while all other traffic is stopped at a red light, buses and bicycles will be allowed through the intersection" because of special signals. Nice.

VCC: Tempo Tuesday! Great to have VCC and Valhalla riding together. They definitely picked up the pace.

A Dude Abikes in the News!: One Year Later…

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

…I’m Still Ready for My Close-Up That’s right, A Dude Abikes was featured in the local newspaper. The blog is titled “Read All About It! A Dude Abikes Featured in the Austin American-Statesman.” While it did not catapult me to stardom or anything, I thought it was a pretty decent write-up.
