About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Winter But Warmer Weather Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2019

Make it two bike rides in a row. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden” route at 12:38 pm after getting home from church. By then the temperature warmed up and I didn’t bundle up as much as yesterday wearing shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. The beginning miles were a little chilly but after 20 minutes I started generating enough body heat I lowered the zipper on the jacket an inch or so.

The sky was mostly cloudy hiding the sun that was abundant yesterday. Weather during the bike ride: start 72 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph gusts 20 mph. Finish 71 (68% humidity), mostly cloud, wind S 10 mph.

I rode the Canyon Endurace CF SLX which is lighter than the Blue Norcross AL by several pounds. Since I am building back my base fitness I restricted the gearing lower than normal. Also with so many days off the bike my butt needs to toughen up too. Yesterday I wore shorts that I think the padding is shot and today I wore the newest pair of shorts and it felt much better. Also I started wearing my new helmet, a Cateye Mixino Red/Black which replaced the helmet I cracked in the November 7th crash. The cracked helmet was a Cateye as well. The Mixino fits snugger and the strap is lighter and not as stiff. That may change when sweating weather arrives.

On the way back from Walden I stopped at Kings Harbor on W. Lake Houston Parkway north of the river and took these photos.

The cloudy sky shows up in the first photo while the second looks more blue.

More warm weather on Monday and I plan on riding. My goal for January is 300 miles which means I need to take advantage of any favorable weather that makes it here.

After 37 Days Off The Bike I Am Back Baby!

Texbiker.net Posted on January 5, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 5, 2019

Today was the first bike ride since November 25th 2018. I have been off the bike since then because of surgery on my right calf for melanoma. Finally it is healed enough with a nice scab to get on the bike and ride.

I decided (with the help of my wife) to not ride too far or too intense so I biked on the Kingwood and Woodridge Forest streets for a total of 20.6 miles. The weather was fantastic though it was a little cool at the 11:05 am start. I wanted to start at 10 am but it was still below 60 degrees so I waited.

Weather for the bike ride: start 61 (64% humidity), fair, wind S 5 mph. Finish 68 (46% humidity), fair, wind SW 8 mph.

It felt great finally turning the pedals on the Blue Norcross AL bike. I opted to ride it rather than the Canyon Endurace because I stayed in Kingwood but I think the next ride, hopefully on Sunday, will be on the Canyon. No problem with my leg flexing as I pedaled. Because of the chilly weather I bundled up probably more than I needed to: shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, regular long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves. By the end of the ride at 12:52 pm I was sweating and ready to get out of all the clothes.

I stopped in Woodridge Forest to take the first two photos and later at the YMCA on W. Lake Houston Parkway for the last two.

The YMCA construction repairs the damage from Hurricane Harvey. I wonder if they built it high enough to withstand the next flood.
