Sunday!

Our last race of the year is the age-based Texas State Championships hosted by Bat City Cycling in Austin. Unlike years past, this race (known as the Cyclocross Scuffle) will not take place and the beloved Moya Park.

We asked James Sides, race promoter, to give us the full scoop. James – what happened to that great track you guys normally run?

The great Halloween flood has washed out the Moya venue. No bathroom facilities but a few tons of natural barriers.

I’m glad you were able to recover quick and double up at…

Pay attention to start times as this event is a bit different than regular race weekends.

TXMTB in 2013
Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Looking back on 2013 it’s pretty amazing what all has happened. The growth from a year ago to today has been absolutely amazing. So today we’re taking a look back at what all has happened over the past 365 days since January 1st of 2013.

First off, the Erwin Park Summer Series.

This is by far the highlight of the year for me and I know that a lot of other people really enjoyed them as well. We had 14 races at Erwin Park in 2013 with anywhere from 30 to 60 racers per week. To really make that number stand out, that is somewhere around 3,000 miles that were raced over the series.

To everyone who came out and raced, Thank you so much it was the highlight of my week and every week since they end has felt a little bit empty. But the best part is the relationships that I formed with a lot of…

Interview: Kent Page – Teacher and San Antonio Bicycle Commuter
bike4heck.com

As my readers know I’m an Elementary Teacher. I’m also the Science facilitator for my campus. At a resent facilitator meeting I was able to sit next to Kent Page. In that time I learned he was a bicycle commuter. I asked Kent if he was interested in doing an interview for my blog. I think you will enjoy Bike4Heck.com’s first local interview:

Bike4Heck.com:  Tell us about yourself?
Kent:  I’m an elementary science teacher. My greatest accomplishments are being married with two kids.
Bike4Heck.com: How long have you been commuting to work?
Kent: I’ve started riding my bike to teach piano lessons before I had a driver’s license as a way to save money for a car. Ironic, no? So I’ve been commuting now for about 300,000 years.
Bike4Heck.com: How long is your commute?
Kent: From my home to my classroom is about 5 miles using the ruler on Google Earth. The drive is about 8 miles by car. Bikers learn circling around the back sides of…

Dallas’ long-in-the-works Complete Streets manual is, at last, complete
By Robert Wilonsky        cityhallblog.dallasnews.com

Four years ago the Dallas City Council got its first look at the so-called Complete Streets Initiative, the intention of which was to one day, bit by bit, make over Dallas’ streets for all comers — not just cars, but hikers and bikers of all ages. (Or, as the city puts it: “Streets that are comfortable for everyone: young and old, motorists or bicyclists, pedestrians, wheel chair users, or transit riders alike.” So, yeah — you.) And way back when the city promised a manual that would, among other things, “define the planning process and standards to be used in the development of a plan for a street.” That’s a residential street, a commercial street, a mixed-use street — really, anywhere there’s a slab of concrete.
On Tuesday, finally, we’ll get our first look at that manual when it’s handed out to…

Midnight Massacre 2013
By Kim            bicyclesoutbackracing.net
Summers in Texas are HOT, and sometimes we have to be creative in our training regimen. The Spinistry puts on some crazy fun events, and their Midnight Massacre gravel grinder seemed like a good fit to mix up our bike routine.

Michelle and I had attempted the 100K gravel ride last year, but were unsuccessful with a torn sidewall about 5 miles into the route. We tried to butt the tire, but that didn’t hold so after going through all our tubes we had to fill the…

Let’s Ride Travis Country Pumphouse – Mountain Biking Barton Creek Greenbelt
www.turnincranks.com

Riding the Travis Country Pumphouse to Barton Creek trail segment. One of my favorite segments at Barton Creek Greenbelt and probably the segment where you have the longest sustained descent and a solid SuperD like effort.

A lot of fun and a good segment to really open it up on!

Let’s Ride!

I’m going to try something new. With the racing season at a slow point, I find myself looking for other things to do when it comes to videos and things to write about.

While I was out riding my new (to me) Jet9 yesterday, and doing a little trail videoing, I thought it might be cool to do some “Let’s Ride…” videos that highlight certain…
