I want the warm weather back – October 31st Bike Ride — 4 Comments

  1. I don’t think I’m ready for that heat again…

When I am surviving the cooler rides I make sure to wear plenty of layers. I typically have a base layer that is thin but wicks water away from the skin really well. I highly recommend the Under Armour Cold Gear for this, I wear both a turtleneck and also a pair of tights with cycling jersey & shorts/bib over those. The most difficult part for me is keeping my toes warm. That is my number 1 least favorite thing about winter cycling, closely followed by the bitterly cold wind we get here in Texas.

  2. I can sympathize with your restrictions. Since my retirement the ability to bike each day has been very enjoyable. I hope you don’t have long to wait.

  3. Toes are a problem. I have tried several things from plastic bags inside my shoes (a windbreak?) to shoe covers. My solution: don’t ride when it is below 60 degrees. Dressing in layers is important but sometimes peeling off the layers presents a problem of what to do with the removed clothing. I had a turtleneck jersey but it was not comfortable. Polypropylene underwear seems to work best because it wicks away the moisture. In the Houston area it does not get as cold as other parts of Texas. In the 1980’s I would ride when it was in 30’s but my tolerance has become less over the years.
