About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Amarillo By Morning: Cyclist Raises Awareness, Money for Seniors

Roz Brown, Producer | www.publicnewsservice.org

SAN ANTONIO — The 65-and-older population has grown by over one-third in the past decade, which prompted a Texas man to take a cross-country bike trip to highlight the growing need for senior care.

Jeff Salter, CEO of Caring Senior Services, arrives in Amarillo today, 10 days before he completes his 9,000-mile trip. Salter’s company provides caregivers for seniors, to help with tasks that allow them to stay in their homes, rather than move to care facilities.

Salter has visited 30 states on his electric bike since April, and said …

Clouds On Display While Biking Out and Back to Splendora

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2021

The Tour is over and I can start bike rides earlier but today I was a little slow getting the bike ride underway. Wheels down and rolling on my Canyon Endurace at 10:09 AM. I chose a route I haven’t done but two times prior to today, “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood”. Now that number is up to 3. As I rode I kept looking at the clouds. You can see many of them in the video.

One reason for the cloud watching was the week’s weather forecast from this morning; a rainy week starting tonight. I figured a long ride might be needed to make up for a missed bike ride or two if that rain comes when I normally ride. Today’s ride came in at 42.25 miles, in line with the other rides on this route in 2021. Since it is the first day of the week no clear direction if this week will be a 200 mile one. The bike ride did make a dent in the gap between 2021 YTD miles versus 2020 lowering the difference to 101 miles from 143 after yesterday’s ride. YTD I am at 5,378 miles. I’m getting closer to my 800 mile goal for July with 617.63 miles.

7-19-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
7-19-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route

Today’s weather conditions while biking: start 86 (75% humidity, 77.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph; finish 91 (61% humidity, 75.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. The wind helped me ride to Splendora and I expected a headwind on the way back to Kingwood but it wasn’t that bad unless I headed directly into it. I stopped for a rest break on the way back at Valley Ranch Parkway under TX 99, the Grand Parkway. The light breeze in the shade felt good while I ate a cereal bar. By the time I finished at 1:42 PM I drank most of the water in my CamelBak. This was one of the hotter rides that started in the morning.

A new ride begins! San Diego to St. Augustine in about 40 days

By David Freeze | www.salisburypost.com

My trusted bike, the long haul Surly, is on the way to Bernie’s Bike Shop near the beach in San Diego. My plane ticket is purchased, a fortunate break to get a direct flight all the way west.

I bought just a few small pieces of new gear because my trusted stuff has been proven to work. I did buy two new tires, hoping that both will survive the entire trip.

The route is called the Southern Tier, planned as the most reasonable route to cross the United States nearest the border with Mexico and then the Gulf Coast. Yes, it will be hot, often over 100 degrees. The climbing will be horrendous at times, and it happens fast. On the very …

… The ride along the Rio Grande into El Paso, Texas, is going to be fun, with Texas dominating the entire route and taking up a third of the total mileage. Starting in El Paso, just across the Rio Grande River from Juarez, Mexico, the route follows the river southward before turning east. After Alpine, towns are few and the country desolate, full of sagebrush and tumbling tumbleweeds. As I travel through central Texas, the route crossed is the famous “hill country.” …

Kingwood Greenbelt Trails Bike Ride At A Party Pace

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2021

The last time I biked the Kingwood Greenbelt trails November 26th, 2017. I used to ride the trails frequently when I owned a mountain bike but since I sold it I only use the trails to get around traffic for road biking. That last ride was on my Blue Norcross AL bike which now sits on my Wahoo Snap smart trainer for Zwift rides. Today I rode my Lynskey R300 bike starting at 1:50 PM in the heat of the day. A good time to ride the trails with lots of shade. I finished at 3:16 PM with the temperature down a few degrees and some thunder in the distance. I rode at what the YouTube channel Path Less Pedaled calls “Party Pace”. My 10.9 mph average speed confirmed the “Party Pace” description.

Because of the long time since my last greenbelt bike ride I thought there might be a few surprises but I got a big one while riding south on Woodland Hills Drive on the way to River Grove Park. You can see what I found in the video starting at the 29 minute mark. I will check this out on return rides from the Spring Creek Greenway.

I wanted to bike at least 10 miles and actually rode 15.23 miles. This pushed my week total to 233.89 miles. That is the most in a week since the week of 5/31/2021. While the week’s total did that the gap between 2021 YTD miles and 2020 YTD widened to 143 miles.

Weather conditions: start 91 ( 60% humidity, 75 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 4 mph; finish 86 (71% humidity, 75.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 20 mph. I didn’t notice the wind picking up with all of the trees. I did notice the humidity change though.

Relive.cc condensed my bike ride into 38 seconds.

Even with the “Party Pace” speed Strava showed a 3rd place medal on the on Grove Park Loop (2:20) segment. (click the Strava image to go to my activity)
