About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

City Manager’s Report: Kilgore College pedestrian bridge railings going to mountain bike trail

By Josh Selleck | www.kilgorenewsherald.com

This week’s highlight involves creative recycling and illustrates how great it is to live in a community like Kilgore where it’s easy to make good things happen. This week, city staff assisted Kilgore College by beginning demolition of some of the handrails on spiral walkways from the old pedestrian bridge.

Pictured below, City street crew members Roderick Davis and Greggory Johnson can be seen cutting away curved sections of the handrail.

The spiral walkway is awaiting demolition later this year, which will pave the way for the new ADA compliant walkway to be built. Several months ago, Kilgore Mayor Ronnie Spradlin mentioned to a group of BigHead Creek Trail volunteers that the …

Weather And Legs Came Together For Out/Back to McQueen Road

Texbiker.net Posted on July 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 21, 2021

No light rain to contend with on today’s bike ride. At the 10:07 AM start lots of blue sky overhead while the temperature wasn’t that hot. I wanted to make up some of the miles I didn’t ride yesterday plus some route variety so I chose my ” Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road” route. This route came into my portfolio this year due to road construction on SH 242 west of I-69/US59. Today was the 6th time I biked this route. The distance on today’s bike ride came in at 40.78 miles, slightly lower than most of the previous rides. Those miles pushed my week’s total to 116.58 miles and July to 691.96 miles. They also narrowed the difference between 2021 YTD vs 2020 miles to 71 miles. For the year I am at 5,452 miles.

7-21-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today's Route
7-21-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary on Today’s Route

The weather change from yesterday was greatly appreciated. The wind direction and speed allowed me to keep a good pace without much of a headwind. It was nice to ride at 17 to 18 mph SE on FM 1314 and not have a headwind fighting me all the way. Overall weather conditions: start 85 (72% humidity, 74.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 4 mph; finish 89 (60% humidity, 73.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 7 mph. Clouds increased as the ride went along but no threat of rain when I finished at 1:27 PM.

The weather and good legs meant my average speed got up to 14.5 mph and stayed there until returning to Kingwood.

Relive.cc compressed my 2:53:31 biking time into less than a minute.

Strava crunched the data and told me today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts. (click on the Strava image to go to my activity page.)

The best bicycle cargo trailer

by: Bob Beacham, BestReviews Staff | www.kxan.com

Which bicycle cargo trailer is best?

A bike basket is a useful accessory, but capacity is limited. Handlebar-mounted models can make the bike unstable with even modest loads. The answer to greater carrying ability is a good bike cargo trailer.

Our report looks at your options and the important features you’ll need to think about. We’ve also made a few recommendations at the end. Our favorite, the Burley Flatbed Utility Bicycle Cargo Trailer, is an open design that offers great versatility and is light, so it won’t slow you down. Considerations when choosing a bicycle cargo trailer

There are all sorts of trailers for bikes. Those for young kids and pets are popular, and if you’re into bicycle touring, there are specialist single-wheel models that are light and compact for …

First Ride On New Bike With An Issue Or Two

Yesterday my new bike took me on the longest ride it has taken me, so far.

3,002 Miles Bicycled in 2021… So Far!

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Tonight’s ride was a modest 10 miles, but it pushed me over 3,000. Round numbers make nice milestones — in my case, literally. Normally I do statistics at the beginning of a new month for the one proceeding. But this marker seemed worthy of a post. For one thing, it is a number that tells me I will have probably ridden my bike more than driven the car I was given in the last year. There’s something to be said for doing what one can to reduce one’s carbon footprint, given the very real and scientific consensus that climate change is killing the planet. (Naysayers can go put on their tin foil hats elsewhere like …

In And Out Of Rain So It Must Be Tuesday Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2021

The plan was to ride to Ramsey Road and back but that didn’t quite happen. I started the bike ride at 9:55 AM. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike. A little earlier start than yesterday. I checked the weather radar before leaving and didn’t see any rain which was encouraging. Not more than a few minutes into the ride and light rain began. It lasted for about a mile. Looking at the sky it looked like rain but I hoped to ride away or around it.

Riding south and east took me back into the light rain until I crossed Kingwood Drive and it stopped. The streets were wet but no falling rain. Since I was already wet and no lightning I kept biking. In Atascocita the streets were dry except close to the curb and I thought my route plan might come to be. In Walden the dry streets continued. When I got to FM 1960 the road was wet until I was on the concrete causeway over Lake Houston. It stayed this way until I rode east of FM 2100 when the light rain returned. In the distance where I wanted to ride I saw rain falling so I turned around changing the route to “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100”. Not as far as I wanted to ride but almost.

I was dry for about 1/2 a mile riding west on Old Atascocita Road when I hit light rain again and it hung with me until I reached the church on Fairlake Lane. The sky looked wet to the east but I would be biking west over Lake Houston. The rest of the ride was without rain. The streets that were wet when I was leaving Kingwood were now dry and the clouds didn’t look so rain producing. I finished the bike ride at 12:37 PM, rinsed off the Canyon and went inside.

A summary of the bike rides this year on the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route I ended up following. 11 times on the route. Today’s 33.55 miles about average.
