About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Two-Time BMX Rider of the Year Brad Simms Joins Canyon

by James Smurthwaite | www.pinkbike.com

BMX legend Brad Simms has signed with Canyon Bikes.

The American rider will not be switching over from BMX but will instead add some mountain biking into his program as, "a medium for him to explore more domestically and spark more diversity in outdoor and action sports communities." The signing was announced on Instagram with one of Simms’ favourtie mountain bikers and now Canyon team mate Fabio Wibmer. …

… Last year, Brad earned two of the sport’s most sought-after accolades – the 2020 NORA Cup BMX Rider of The Year and the 2020 Vital BMX Rider of The Year. He currently resides in Austin, Texas which he helped solidify as a hub for BMX riders in the United States. …

TxDOT Seeking Public Input on Early Plans For Dallas I-30 Corridor Project

By Claire Cardona | www.nbcdfw.com

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on the early phase of a proposed plan to reconstruct a 4.4-mile portion of Interstate 30 East.

The scope of the massive project includes widening and reconstructing I-30 East from Interstate 345 and Interstate 45 to Ferguson Road — the portion of freeway that bisects parts of Deep Ellum, East Dallas, Fair Park, South Dallas and Pleasant Grove.

The proposal, which TxDOT shared Tuesday in a virtual presentation, would include adding a fifth lane in each direction and depressing the main and managed lanes below ground level from I-345/I-45 to Dolphin Road. It would also include reconstruction of ramps and bridges, a second reversible managed lane and accommodations for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. …

Video: Treat of the Day: UT students and alumni bike across the country to support cancer research

By Grace Leis | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Current and former students from the University of Texas hit the road early Tuesday morning to continue their travel for Texas 4000.

The group of 19 will bike ride all summer long to raise money for cancer research and promote awareness. 85 people are spending the summer cycling more than 4,000 miles across the country.

The group’s next stop is Houston, then will eventually head up to the Midwest and the East Coast before coming back to Austin.

The local Brazos Valley Texas Exes Chapter hosted the team last night with a meal and in area homes before they set out this morning.

Texas 4000 participants travel through Bryan-College Station

By CHELSEA KATZ | theeagle.com

University of Texas students who are part of the Texas 4000 cycling program stopped in Bryan and College Station for a night as their 4,000-mile journey through the eastern United States got underway.

Typically, the ride — which is in memory and in support of those battling cancer — would take the cyclists from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska, but this year’s routes are limited because the Canadian border is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas 4000 rider and recent UT graduate Karen Liu said. Last year’s physical summer ride was canceled due to the pandemic.

All riders were required to…

‘It’s just patience at this point’: El Paso cycling business adapts as pandemic bike shortage continues

By Madeline Ottilie | kvia.com

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — It has been just about a year since bike shops nationwide saw shelves cleared and inventory drop. Now, some business owners say shortages still have not stopped.

U.S. Census data shows more Americans have been riding bikes during the pandemic too and prices have gone up. Researchers cite increased popularity and limited supply.

Roberto Barrio, the owner of El Paso’s Crazy Cat Cyclery shop, said his store has had difficulty securing accessories and parts for repairs and service. New bikes, he said, are just trickling in.

“If they’re not on a waiting list then they’re going to be waiting til there’s open inventory,” Barrio said. “I think that’s going to …

Hoodoo-Like Cairn Leads Us To Circle Trail End

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

I came to the end of the trail, today. The Circle Trail, that is.

I dropped off an elderly senior citizen for an appointment with one of his doctors, and then drove to the east Circle Trail access to the Wichita Bluff Nature Area, unloaded my bike, and rolled its wheels for a few kilometers.

About halfway through the WB Nature Area I came upon the tallest Hoodoo-like Cairn I have yet seen at this location.

I got off the bike to …

New Asphalt, New Jersey, Lots of Heat

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2021

I decided it had been long enough not biking on my “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route due to road construction. That was the route for today’s bike ride. The video shows the status of the work on Gene Campbell Blvd. around the new Keefer Crossing Middle School. The last time I biked this route was back in March. I will not wait as long for the next ride on this route.

6-9-2021 Overview of Bike Rides on Todays Route YTD

The route followed the streets I used in 2020 to begin the bike ride rather than the streets I use in 2021. That probably accounts for the shorter distance today.

Passed the resurfaced section of Gene Campbell Blvd. going west it appears the road will be 4 lanes. This is in front of the Walmart Distribution Center and where the Lowes distribution center will be. The increase in truck traffic might making riding here a problem but almost every truck that passes me gives plenty of room. There was one truck a couple of years ago that passed me and cut back into the lane too quick but I was able to slow and avoid any problem.

A new bike jersey for today’s bike ride from Primal named Ol’ Texas Jersey. I retired a Bike Nashbar red lightning bolt jersey.

The Camelbak hydration pack helped me handle the heat. I stopped at the Valero station on FM 1314 at Sorters Road to refill it for the last 12 miles of the ride.

Starting at 11:02 AM meant the temperature had time to move closer to the hot part of the day. I finished at 2:06 PM. What the weather was like: start 87 (71% humidity, 76.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph; finish 89 (66% humidity, 76.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. The wind helped a little to cool me. The headwind biking SE on FM 1314 wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be.

Texas Bicycle News June 8th 2021

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2021

What Texas Cyclists Need to Know to Stay Safe

thekatynews.com

Texas has long been a fiercely independent state. They do things their way, and that often involves big trucks, BBQ, and cowboy hats. There’s also a new element, though, that has crept in over the past couple of decades.

Some younger individuals with a more politically liberal ideology have made Texas their home. For instance, these Millennials and Gen Z members might head to Austin, a bastion of art and music. The Texans you meet there are more likely to ride a bicycle than to cruise around in a pickup truck.

Cycling is great exercise anywhere you choose to do it, but if you live in Texas and this is the transportation method you prefer, there are a few things you should understand and acknowledge for your safety. …

El Pasoan honors her father on 70-day bike ride to raise cancer awareness

Robert Moore | elpasomatters.org

As she prepared for her junior year as a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Austin, Carolina Mendez’s life was forever altered on July 3, 2019, when her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Gilbert Mendez, an industrial engineer in El Paso, got world-class treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. But he succumbed to the aggressive disease less than14 months later at age 62.

As her father battled his cancer in the fall of 2019, Carolina Mendez joined Texas 4000 for Cancer, a program for UT Austin students that aims to raise cancer awareness and funding by a bicycle ride from Austin to Alaska each summer. She has dedicated her ride — which will …

College Station City Council Approves Seeking State Grants To Help Pay For A Shared Use Path And New Bicycle Lanes

Bill Oliver | wtaw.com

The College Station city council has approved submitting two grant applications to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

One would narrow traffic lanes on George Bush between Texas and Wellborn by making room for curbed bicycle lanes in each direction. If approved, the city would spend an estimated $515,000 and the state about $1 million dollars. …

Going the Distance: How Texas 4,000 plans to ride cancer off into the sunset

Author: Elisabeth Tharp | www.kagstv.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Since summer 2004, Texas 4000 participants bike around the country to spread hope, knowledge and charity to communities. Their overall mission: to bring cancer prevention awareness to the forefront and ask folks to get their own screening.

A recent graduate from the University of Texas and Smokey Mountains route rider, Karen Liu said usually they’d travel all the way to Alaska, but this year, things are different. …

Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended Route Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2021

More summer like weather for today’s bike ride. Biking to the south and east I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route traveling 35.18 miles. My Lynskey R300 bike carried me over those miles. I started at 10:48 AM and finished at 1:31 PM just as the heat of the day usually arrives.

Weather conditions: start 85 (71% humidity, 74.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 89 (64% humidity, 75.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph. The wind made for some hard pedaling until I made the turn to the north at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road. The humidity level meant plenty of sweat produced. Whenever I stopped sweat dropped on many things.

At Atascocita Shores Drive and FM 1960 the road construction closed one west bound lane. Not much impact biking east after turning right off of Atascocita Shores Drive coming from Walden. West bound on the return from Huffman I rode on the closed lane next to the orange barrels to Atascocita Shores Drive where I turned right.

While I rode Strava sent me a message that I lost the “Local Legend” title on the Kings Crossing North segment to Mark Crosno. Mark rode the segment 31 times to my 30.
