About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The bicycling industry experienced a big boom during the coronavirus pandemic.

College Station leaders discuss action on road improvements

By Megan Rodriguez | theeagle.com

College Station leaders are looking into pursuing road improvements, including separated bike lanes along George Bush Drive and a shared-use path project on Harvey Mitchell Parkway.

At their last meeting in May, council members voted unanimously to authorize grant applications to the Texas Department of Transportation for the projects. If received, the grant will cover 80% of construction costs. The city would be responsible for 20% of construction costs and 100% of design costs. The funds would be for fiscal year 2023 or 2024. The city will be notified if …

Windy Joy and Pain | New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2021

Out riding the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike on today’s bike ride. Starting at 11:05 AM I biked what I label the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. This route goes north through New Caney and into Roman Forest looping back to I-69/US59. Veering west of I-69/US59 at Valley Ranch Parkway through Briartree and Oakhurst. From Oakhurst I continue south rejoining I-69/US59 north of Kingwood Drive where a u-turn takes me north turning east to Kings Manor and back to Kingwood. All of these roads and streets added up to 41.23 miles. Those miles narrowed the gap between YTD 2021 and 2020 to 128 miles. Last year on this date I rode 21.78 miles which accounts for closing the gap. So far I have biked each day in June.

Finally a day without a big threat of rain but as I write this to the north of Cleveland a mass of rain shows on the radar. Supposedly this will come to the south. During my bike ride wind was strong which helped me get to Roman Forest and hindered my return to the south. What the weather conditions looked like: start 86 (76% humidity, 77.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph; finish 86 (71% humidity, 75.5 dew point), overcast, wind S 15 mph gusts 24 mph. Those 24 mph gusts took a toll on my legs and average speed while I rode south to finish at 2:18 PM.

I’m not going to say too much about the bike ride and let the video speak for itself. I used the Drift Ghost XL camera to record most of today’s bike ride. I wanted to get more practice using it because on last Monday’s bike ride on the Spring Creek Greenway I thought the camera was recording but wasn’t. I pushed the record button but held it too long and the camera went to “settings” instead.

Link to my Strava activity page for the bike ride.

Texas roadway deaths ‘going the wrong way’ as 2021 looks to be risky year for driving

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Joy Monroe just wanted tacos, but the three crashes she passed driving through Rice Village served up a reminder that Houston streets remain dangerous.

“There was (debris) everywhere,” the 49-year-old said of the first wreck she passed on Buffalo Speedway. “People drive so fast, it’s why people are dying.”

With traffic levels returning to normal levels post-COVID, Texas is on track for more than 4,000 deaths on state roads, a total unseen since the mid-1980s when the state had millions fewer residents and far deadlier streets, according to partial estimates from the first five months of 2021.

In the Houston region, sharp increases in pedestrian and bicycling deaths, along with …

Almost Summer Like, Piling On Some Miles, Pulled In A Local Legend

Texbiker.net Posted on June 6, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 6, 2021

It felt like a summer day when I rolled my Lynskey R300 out the door to start today’s bike ride. Part of that was due to starting at 1:41 PM after getting home from church. Earlier in the morning it was cooler. I decided to ride my “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route but I modified it when I came to Old Sorters Road. Instead of turning right I went left. When I approached the turn I looked in my rear view mirror and was surprised to see two cyclists coming to me. They passed me just before the intersection going to the right. (You can see them in the video). Even though I modified the route some I kept the same label. I rode the unmodified route last Sunday and this was the 6th time this year.; 4 times on my Lynskey R300 and 2 times on my Canyon Endurace.

Before the ride I stood at 221 miles for the week and with today’s 30.8 miles the week finished with 252.14 miles. Looking for the last time I biked more miles in a week I had to go all the way to the week April 20 to 26, 2020 when I biked 262.12 miles.

6-6-2021 SportTracks Summary of Week Bike Rides

I am making great progress reaching my 800 mile goal for June with 203.49 miles after 6 days of biking. I need to average 26.67 miles per day and I am averaging 33.83 miles per day. This puts me 43 miles ahead of the 26.67 mile per day pace.

The bike ride weather summary today: start 86 (67% humidity, 73.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind 7 mph; finish 87 (67% humidity, 74.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. As I write this I hear thunder from an isolated rain pocket over my area. A little rain has fallen but it missed me while biking.

Strava awarded me the “Local Legend” for the “Old Heb Alley” segment from today’s route. Since I rearranged my routes I don’t ride this segment as much as I used to. Wonder how long I hold this title.
