About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Once and done for 2021. A lot of nice people as well as sketchy riders. Glad to see some familiar faces I haven’t seen since Covid. A few took a spill on wet roads and lot more near misses. Decided to roll with a just a handful of riders on the way back. Kudos to William M for taking most of the hard pulls on the way home.

Cyclists Along The Route, Directions Failure, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on June 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 5, 2021

A 9:00 AM start to today’s bike ride meant a possibility of seeing other cyclists along my “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike carried me over the 31.48 mile ride. At the 10 mile point the week hit 200+ miles and 221.34 miles at the end. It was nice to finish at 11:28 AM, earlier than some of my ride starts. 2021 YTD miles falls short of YTD 2020 by 143 miles but I am keeping the difference about the same. June totals 172.68 miles on my way to the 800 mile goal.

6-5-2021 Bike Ride Start Canyon Endurace

During 2021 I have biked this route 9 times, all on the same bike.

As I entered Walden an older lady on a cruiser bike waved me down. She asked if I knew how to get to Pine Shores Drive. I told her I wasn’t sure where it was (not thinking to pull my phone out and look it up). But I told her the turns to take to ride to the next subdivision. It was a lot of right turns with a left turn thrown in. I think she understood and she rode on. Later I realized I should have looked it up and rode with her. I did look up the street at home and my directions got her close even if I didn’t know where it was. I figured from the street name it must be close to Lake Houston.

No rain along the course today. A day ago the weather forecast looked like today would be wet. A Summary of the weather after the bike ride. No wind to speak of helping me build up my overall average speed to 14.5 mph. I decided to wear a long sleeve jersey under my short sleeve Texbiker.net jersey for the cool start and sun protection later on.

Commentary: Inside gravel cycling’s ‘wait or race’ debate

Fred Dreier | www.velonews.com

Feed zones and mid-race stops present an ethical conundrum, as top riders look to establish unwritten rules of etiquette.

We’re all familiar with pro road cycling’s wait-or-race debate, right?

It’s that fun argument that erupts whenever a GC star is slowed by a crash or mechanical, and his rivals push on ahead.

As it turns out, gravel cycling has it’s own version of the wait-or-race debate, and there’s a good chance that we may see it play out at this weekend’s Unbound Gravel.

Here’s the ethical conundrum in gravel: What happens when the front group or riders agree to stop together at a feed zone, but one rider skips the stop to gain an advantage? The gravel cycling world saw this scenario play out at the May 22 Gravel Locos race in Hico, Texas.

Here’s what happened: …

Meet the classically trained pianist who could win Unbound Gravel

Fred Dreier | www.velonews.com

Emily Newsom is on the short list to win Unbound Gravel. Newsom is also a mom, a classically trained pianist, and perhaps the USA’s most interesting pro cyclist.

EMPORIA, Kansas (VN) — On most Wednesday nights you can find Emily Newsom playing her set at Lili’s Bistro in Fort Worth, Texas.

Under the dimmed houselights the regular guests will sip cocktails and clap and sing along, perhaps unaware that their entertainer for the night is also one of the country’s top professional cyclists. Newsom may open her gig with “Karma Police” by Radiohead, or with her version of Bill Withers’ classic “Ain’t No Sunshine,” before diving into one of the countless jazz standards that she knows by heart.

For three hours Newsom will …

New Bike Stuff, Dodged Rain Clouds

Texbiker.net Posted on June 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 4, 2021

So far June is off to a wet start but I managed to not get caught in the rain. Today the sky and forecast looked like rain but I dodged the rain though a few minutes after finishing the bike ride I heard light rain hitting the patio cover. It didn’t last long.

Watch the video to see some new bike stuff used on the bike ride.

The Critérium du Dauphiné stage finished early thanks to the fast pace allowing me to get a somewhat early start on the bike ride at 10:19 AM. The route headed north and then back to Kingwood finishing at 12:51 PM. I chose this route to not tempt the rain to dump on me. I call this the “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. At 157 miles for the week before today’s bike ride I biked 32.54 miles boosting the week to 189.86 miles. Eleven miles to reach 200 for the week. Looks possible with 2 days left but the forecast contains rain. So far in 2021 I rode this route 8 times; 5 times on my Lynskey R300 and 3 times on my Canyon Endurace.

What the weather was like: start 74 (93% humidity, 72.1 dew point), overcast, wind E 7 mph; finish 77 (84% humidity, 71.8 dew point), overcast, wind E 7 mph. Very humid thanks to all of the rain.

I rode my Lynksey R300 bike which rolled to 4,278 miles.

6-4-2021 Bike Ride Lynskey R300 New BiSaddle

Thanks to the support person at Wahoo Fitness I set my new Bolt V2 power to show the one colors. You can see this in the video. Nice touch. BPM is on the left and power on the right at the bottom of the display.
