About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

12-year-old Austin boy looking for his forever family gets biking lessons from BMX pro

Author: Tori Larned | www.kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — A daredevil in the making, 12-year-old David is not afraid to go after what he wants.

An adventurous, intelligent and loving boy, David loves his bike so he did not hold back when he got the opportunity to learn from BMX pro Aaron Ross.

"It is amazing. I love it. I might have fallen a few times, but it is fun," David said about his morning spent with Ross.

One pedal after another, David learned new tricks and pushed himself to the limits, even falling a few times and picking himself back up.

"The thing that is the …

That which you see above is almost completed. I have been watching this under construction for over a year, as I bike north on the Circle Trail through Hamilton Park.

When this is completed it will be a water fountain playfield for kids. The photo does not show the shade awnings already installed above the fountain playfield. The shade awnings match those already installed above the avant garde climbing playground which came to life a couple years ago.

I biked to this location late …

Dusted Off A Neglected Route, Beat The Rain Home

Texbiker.net Posted on June 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 3, 2021

I dusted off a neglected route for today’s bike ride. The last time I biked it was May 8th, 2018. Wheels down and rolling at 10:59 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The route: “Eagle Springs – Walden – Huffman”. The video points out the difference between this route and the others going to the south and east. I rode 38.86 miles before finishing at 2:00 PM. Not long after the finish the thunder started with some rain. Good timing for a change.

Some different gear on the May 8th ride: Catlike helmet, PowerPod power meter, Wahoo Elemnt bike computer, and Sidi Genius Fit Mega shoes. See the image below for today’s gear.

With those miles my week moved to 157.32 miles and June passed 100 to 108.67 miles. Now if the rain lets me I have 3 days to get to 200+ miles for the week. I’m 14% of the way to my 800 mile goal for June. Not too bad after 3 days. The Canyon Endurace odometer hit 22, 301 miles.

Weather conditions: start 79 (75% humidity, 70.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 84 (67% humidity, 72.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. The humidity being close to the temperature meant muggy biking. It was unusual for the wind to be so calm. The normal high for June 3rd is 89.6 degrees.

No different Strava segments on this route from my usual bike ride to Huffman.

A comparison of some previous rides on today’s route. I didn’t use a power meter for the rides without the purple bar on the right. The average speed today is lower than the others.

Registration opens for Tour de France-affiliated cycling event set for 2022

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

Registration is now open for what organizers hope will be the city’s largest-ever cycling event next year, an array of rides for both serious racers and recreational cyclists staged by a group affiliated with the Tour de France.

L’Etape San Antonio sponsor Michael Brown and local sports and tourism officials announced details at a press conference Tuesday, following news last month that Brown had chosen San Antonio as the site for the event, set for April 10, 2022.

“Basically, anybody with a bicycle in …

Bastrop City Council set to adopt regulations for fee-based electric bicycles, scooters

Cameron Drummond | www.statesman.com

The Bastrop City Council is poised to adopt a new ordinance to regulate electric bicycle, GPS-equipped bicycle and motor-assisted scooter services in the city.

The City Council on May 25 voted 4-0 to approve the first reading of the ordinance, which would go into effect should it pass a second vote June 8.

Only four members of the council were present during the May 25 meeting to vote on the ordinance. Council Member Bill Peterson was …

What I learned riding with Critical Mass, Houston’s most-hated (and misunderstood) bike ride

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Hating Critical Mass is easy to do in a city like Houston.

The monthly group ride is pretty much everything this traffic-choked city loathes: A freewheeling procession of cyclists that sometimes disregard traffic laws, ride where they please and generally make drivers nervous.

I, too, held my own mixed feelings about the cadre of bicyclists that take over the streets of Houston at the end of every month — but those beliefs have shifted after participating in a ride for myself last week. …

600 Days in a Row of Bicycling

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Back on February 23 I wrote 10 Techniques I Used to Bicycle 500 Days in a Row. With today’s ride I’ve added 100 more to that. Quite by accident, coincidence or kismet, the screen shot of the dates (below) was taken with 66% of my phone battery left at 6:00 pm. How cool is that? So yeah, every day for a whole year, seven months and 22 days, I’ve swung a leg over the top tube of Sophie the Fairdale Weekender Archer (and occasionally Sonnie the GT Arette) and pedaled away. But here’s the thing: I don’t recommend it, unless you enjoy a challenge like the one attributed to …

CCC gravel ride…yikes Jack’s pre-60th birthday ride

Arthur Westover | www.strava.com

My first time to try the McKinney Wed night ride. I believe this used to be the McKinney Velo ride. Unfortunately I went through a series of pot holes and got a pinch flat and was thus dropped. Fixed my flat and was about to head back the way I came (because I didn’t have the route downloaded). But then the small B group came by and I rode in with them. The bummer is to make that drive and then not get to do the ride.

The best thing about this ride was the rain…

Modest Wind, Temperatures | Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 2, 2021

The weather behaved for today’s bike ride with some sun and light wind. I watched the Critérium du Dauphiné ITT this morning before starting my ride. The commentator mentioned the wind was 10 k/hr (8 mph) and how it was hard racing into. I wish the wind around Houston was that low speed more often. Today it was.

Biking north on my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route I rode 36.5 miles. This started at 10:28 AM and finished at 1:19 PM. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike. This was the 5th time to ride this route in 2021, 3 times on the Lynskey and 2 times on my Canyon Endurace. The last time was on May 14th. I stopped in Woodbridge Forest for these photos because of the flowers.

  • 6-2-2021 Bike Ride Lynskey R300 Woodridge Forest-1
  • 6-2-2021 Bike Ride Lynskey R300 Woodridge Forest-2
  • 6-2-2021 Bike Ride Lynskey R300 Woodridge Forest-3

So far this week I biked 118.46 miles which should mean a 200 mile week but the weather forecast shows rain coming Friday and Saturday. I need to compensate on tomorrow’s bike ride.

Today’s weather: start 80 (76% humidity, 71.7 dew point), a few clouds, wind variable 5 mph; finish 84 (67% humidity, 72 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. The humidity was high enough whenever I stopped moisture ran down my arms and face. Moving it felt cooler.

I became a “local legend” according to Strava on the “Briar Willow to Lodge” segment. These come and go quickly.
