About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Rain Window But It Wanted To, Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 1, 2021

Before biking today it rained about.05″ with the forecast promising more. But the no rain window stayed open long enough for me to bike without getting more than sprinkled on several times. The sky looked threatening but I think my sunglasses enhanced that look. I started at 10:45 AM not long after I watching stage 3 of the Critérium du Dauphiné from France. I chose a southerly and eastern route on what I call “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100”. I biked 33.31 miles which improved the week’s total to 81.96 miles and a good start towards my 800 mile goal for June. I need to average 27 miles per day to get there. I biked this route for the 7th time in 2021, 4 times on the Canyon and 3 times on the Lynskey bikes.

Today’s bike.

6-1-2021 Bike Ride Canyon Endurace

Humidity and dew point reflected the rain in the forecast which meant sweating a lot even though it wasn’t that warm. Weather conditions: start 79 (89% humidity, 75.1 dew point), overcast, wind S 9 mph; finish 79 (84% humidity, 73.3 dew point), light rain, wind W 9 mph.

I thought of the bike ride as somewhat of recovery after yesterday’s 48 mile ride. But with the wind below 10 mph there were times when I kept the speed at 17 to 19 mph.

Memorial Day On The Spring Creek Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on May 31, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 31, 2021

It’s Memorial Day. Time to remember those who gave their lives for our country. Before today’s bike ride I took these photos for remembering them.

  • 5-31-2021 Bike Ride Start Canyon Endurace Memorial Day-1
  • 5-31-2021 Bike Ride Start Canyon Endurace Memorial Day-3

I thought it would be a good day to bike on the Spring Creek Greenway. I wasn’t the only person to have that thought. As you see in the video many bikers, walkers and joggers were out. Weather cooperated with a low dew point and some sun. I began at 9:58 AM riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike and after riding 48.65 miles I finished at 1:58 PM.

The video shows my introduction of the ride and one clip before starting to approach the bridge over the San Jacinto River. Then the video shows the ride to the end at I-45. I thought I recorded the return from John Pundt Park to I-69/US59 but I didn’t start the Drift Ghost camera properly.

This wrapped up May bike rides with a total of 864.7 miles. This is the second highest total in 2021 after April’s 915.65 miles. Maybe if the rain allowed I could’ve beat that. I did not bike on 6 days and got caught in the rain two times. One of those rain rides a nice lady gave me a ride home since my wife can longer help me. Below is a summary of the month’s bike rides. A good start to ride 200 miles this week. Today was the longest bike ride in May.

I stopped at John Pundt Park on the bike ride back to the I-69/US59 trailhead to eat a granola bar. After finishing the bar I took this photo. For some reason Strava is slow to update the total miles biked on my Canyon Endurace. The correct number is 22,229 miles.

5-31-2021 Bike Ride Canyon Endurace Pundt Park

Several places on the greenway showed signs of high water but were dry except for a short section leaving Pundt Park to Carter Park. Water covered the asphalt about 2 inches deep for about 20 feet.

Weather conditions: start 80 (74% humidity, 70.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 7 mph; finish 83 (68% humidity, 71.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. The wind wasn’t bad on the greenway thanks to all of the trees. With the shade it didn’t feel that hot. Humidity and dew point helped with the heat. It felt like a good day for biking.

Strava recorded a bunch of personal medals: 2 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze. I never think of these until they pop up after the ride.
