On Tuesday, Southeast Texas natives Joe Haeggquist, Tom Simon, Charlie Dixon, Eric Laing, Richard James and Britt Gober will begin pedaling their bicycles across the country from San Diego to Washington, D.C.

The group plans to traverse the 3,300 miles in 33 days - 100 miles a day - to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which focuses on cancer awareness. They plan to stop in 34 cities.

Along the way, they’ll be sporting helmets with a Beaumont logo, and the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau provided them with T-shirts to hand out at each stop.

“It’s time again for hundreds of cyclists to take the roads, but they won’t only be riding for fun and exercise but also to raise money for a program that provides free legal services to those in need.

After successfully raising almost $50,000 in the last two years, the third annual Spindletop Spin will be held June 7 to benefit the Jefferson County Pro Bono Program.”

Ride of Silence - Beaumont, TX

May 23, 2008 By: Rick Ankrum Category: News, Ride

from kfdm.com

“It’s a constant battle cyclists say will only get worse without awareness.  That’s why bicyclists in Beaumont have made it a priority to remind drivers of cyclists rights, while remembering those who died because those rights were not recognized.

Cyclists say this year’s ride of silence is especially important because of the increased number of bikers riding the streets due to high gasoline prices and the most recent cyclist’s death that happened only two months into this year.

Tonight’s group was made up of cyclists and supporters who wore black arm bands in memory of the fallen, and cyclists who wore red arm bands that personally survived a run-in with a vehicle.”
