Coming to grips with annual BP/MS 150 bike ride
By Jo Watts      Smithville Times contributing writer         www.statesman.com
I always dread the third Sunday of April (last Sunday) while, at the same time, feeling guilty for doing so. It’s the weekend of the BP/MS150. It’s the bicycle ride from Houston to Austin, that comes by Smithville and Bastrop, and that raises more money for charity than any single fundraising event has ever done. The results aren’t yet in for 2013, but each year these riders raise more than $11million to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.
On Saturday evening I met several riders as they were enjoying our community, the food at Bastrop’s Grace Miller’s restaurant (chicken fried steak), the music (my son’s band – The Watts Brothers Band), the waitress (my granddaughter). The riders promised me that they would return…

The two men were among the estimated 13,000 bike riders to take part in the fundraising ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Nationwide, more than…

I went out there for the first time this morning and it’s pretty awesome. It’s neat because it’s tucked away literally behind a neighborhood. I’m a visual person so I took pics of where to park, etc to hopefully help out the next guy who likes pictures.
Trail parking is located on Wimberly Canyon Dr (should be around the 3200-3300 block) just west of Richland Springs LN along the north side curb. The lanes are pretty wide lanes so if you hug the curb you should have a bit…

The rain was a no-show but the cool weather, sun and wind did show up. This morning the temperature hovered around 49 degrees and slowly moved up to the 60’s. I waited to start my ride until 2:20 to get some more warmth in the air to offset the windchill. The wind added to the coolness with 17 mph NE and 23 mph gusts waiting for me when I road north. At least it was 68 when I left home and by the time I got back it added 2 degrees to 70. The slowed down some to 12 mph with 18 mph gusts.
My tired legs really labored whenever I rode into the wind. Riding north on the US59 service road I saw large inclines where I usually think of the road as being flat. A couple of times I pedaled at 10 mph. I breathed a sigh of relief as I crawled up the Community Drive overpass and headed south with the wind behind me. It wasn’t enough for me to improve my average speed much ending up at 14.1 mph over the 30.22 mile route. My legs were still reeling from yesterday’s hurry up ride.
With the wind I chose a cold weather wardrobe of windbreaker jacket, long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys, leg warmers over my shorts. I was comfortable and thankful when I got stopped in the traffic trying to get into Kingwood on Kingwood Drive. There appeared to be a wreck at Loop 494. Eventually I took the US59 northbound service road to get around the problem. Needless to say by the time I got to the Loop 494 and Kingwood Drive intersection the wreck was cleared and the traffic flowing.
I took a different route once I was back in Kingwood where I did not re-trace the streets I too going out. I have this thing about not riding on top of the route if I can. It has been awhile since I rode this way and I don’t think I have rode this exact overall route before which is hard to do after 22 years of biking from Kingwood.
April mileage now totals 569.66 and year to date is 1884.3 miles. Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com maps.
I may have to skip riding tomorrow due to a meeting.
