April temperatures in February are not the norm but today it was. When I started the bike ride at 11:48 AM it was already 79 degrees with an overcast sky. After riding to the south yesterday I rode north on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route for 37.50 miles. This increased February to 146.67 miles, 43% of the to my goal for the month.
Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (73% humidity), overcast 79, wind S 15 mph gusts 27 mph. Finish 81 (65% humidity), overcast, wind S 12 mph gusts 22 mph. I ditched the jacket and wore shorts, long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve jersey over top, and half finger gloves. with the 81 degrees the long sleeve jersey wasn’t necessary but I was comfortable with. It was a new Bellwether jersey.
Wind was big today and I knew at some point I would face the strong headwind. On the way to New Caney the wind propelled me along with medium effort on my part. Making the u-turn under I-69/US59 by Caney Creek I got my first taste of the headwind as I rode up the incline from the creek bottom. On FM 1485 biking to the west the wind was slowed down by the trees and building. I expected going to the SW on Gene Campbell Road might be tough but again the trees and direction kept me from getting the full force of the wind.
The last time I rode this route was 10/29/2018 and I wondered how the new subdivision Ports Mill was growing so I stopped and took these photos.
A lot more houses are there. One street contains all of the houses built so far but more streets are under construction. The photo with the flag shows how strong the wind was.
Leaving Ports Mill I rode to FM 1314 to begin biking to the SE. With the change in direction I expected a tough ride from Gene Campbell Road to Old Sorters Road where the route turns south. Thanks to the trees slowing the wind down and traffic proving some relief it wasn’t too bad. I stopped at the Circle K at Sorters Road to refill my water bottle and continued riding.
I made it past the schools in Briar Tree well before the parents arrived and traffic got crazy. Same with the Kings Manor and Bear Branch schools finishing the ride at 2:44 PM, a minute later than yesterday’s ride.
With the wind riding produced:
131 average heart rate, 75% of my theoretical top
153 max heart rate, 87% of my theoretical top
1.11 aerobic efficiency
141 average watts
534 max watts
Tomorrow the weather returns to February’s normal with a front arriving. This most likely means no biking for the next few days.

STANDING ATOP the new 485-foot pedestrian suspension bridge in Mason Park along Brays Bayou in the East End, it’s hard to believe you’re still in city limits, save for the skyscrapers rising to the west. Pelicans soar. Turtles sun themselves. Everywhere you look, there are blue jays, cormorants, egrets, ducks. A great blue heron presides over newly planted wetlands. A bald eagle is rumored to live upstream.
You can bike here from Hermann Park along the Brays Bayou Greenway, a 10-foot-wide path that currently dead-ends at a railroad trestle just beyond the park. Soon …

CTRMA’s 183 North project is in the news as ramping up again. Not a lot of major bike infrastructure planned but it will certainly help close dangerous (and deadly) gaps for cyclists and pedestrians in northwest Austin.
#66: Bus ridership is flat. The number of bus trips is essentially flat from 2007 to 2015, which is a reduction in bus share since the population increased during that time.
#70: Sidewalk miles increasing. Streets with sidewalks went from 44% to 53% from 2013-17, a healthy 20% increase.

The supposed witch’s castle sits on a three-acre tract at 3613 Greenwood Drive. Waco surveyor John Kamenec set out to find the truth about the structure.
WACO, Texas — It’s a mystery that has loomed over Central Texas for nearly six decades.
There are people in the Waco area who claim there’s a ‘Witch’s Castle’ at Cameron Park, but is it real?
The supposed Witch’s Castle sits on a three-acre tract at 3613 Greenwood Drive. The piece of land was once known as Eagle Rock, which is the highest point in all the Cameron Park trail system.
All that’s left is a two-hole concrete outhouse and the frame of what used to be a house. The home was built in 1912, but it burned down in 1961 and became known as the Witch’s Castle.
Making peace with the absurdity of indoor cycling was the only way to keep me off my couch.

My planned bike ride route depended on the bridge construction on Old Atascocita Road at the railroad tracks to be completed or no work crews present. When I got there City of Houston work crews busied themselves on the worksite short circuiting my route to plan B, “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” with a side of Fairlake Drive. Instead of 31 miles I rode 30.2 miles which is not bad but not what or where I expected to ride. What it looked like at the bridge. It looks like the guardrails will be the last pieces to finish the job but I could be wrong.
The ride began at 12:16 Pm and the weather during the bike ride: start 72 (90% humidity),overcast, wind S 8 mph. Finish 73 (88% humidity), overcast, wind S 8 mph. It wasn’t quite as warm as the forecast but for February I am glad. I dressed for it with shorts, long sleeve jersey under a windbreaker jacket, and half finger gloves. At the start I zipped the jacket higher but as it progressed I lowered it some to allow the body heat to escape.
With today’s miles February stands at 109.18, 32% of my goal for February.
On the way back to Kingwood I stopped on Atascocita Shores Drive and took these photos.
This wasn’t a high energy ride with my average hear rate at 128 (73%), max at 151 (86%). Power 123 watts average and 397 watts max. I am starting to rebuild my condition from taking the month of December off.
Returning to Kingwood i beat the high school traffic and when I got to Kingwood Drive the traffic light was in my favor not requiring a stop. I went on to finish the ride at 2:43PM.
Wednesday weather forecast looks like a repeat of today. Thursday weather shows a front arriving and temperatures going down. Wednesday may be the last ride this week until Saturday or Sunday.
Laredo City Council had an especially long agenda during their previous regular meeting, so naturally some common themes emerged from the group. Beyond the makeup of the city’s leadership, perhaps the most prominent motif was transportation, namely alternative transportation.
For instance, council introduced an ordinance to establish a six-month pilot program for dockless scooters and bicycles. …
After nearly 4 years away, I started riding again recently. I have a nice 5 year old FS bike I am perfectly happy with, but got bit by a new bike bug, as you are bound to be after rekindling an old passion. In short, I’d like to buy a new bike. In an attempt to rationalize this irrational thing I want to do, I’ve been reading all the internet chatter about long, slack, and low, which seems to be all the rage nowadays. For those of you who made the change to one of these new bikes with modern geometry, what were your …
