About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

February Warmth and Fog Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 4, 2019 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 4, 2019

Today’s bike ride made up for yesterday when the weather was too dreary to entice me outside. I set out at 12:26 PM after waiting for the fog to lift higher biking the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route 42.56 miles increasing February riding to 78.98 miles or 23% of my 345 mile February goal.

Finally the weather warmed up so I dressed lighter: shorts, long sleeve jersey, windbreaker jacket, and half finger gloves. It felt nice to finally bike with less clothing. Weather during the bike ride: start 74 (83% humidity), overcast, wind SW 7 mph. Finish 76 (78% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 6 mph. Wind wasn’t much a factor.

Biking through Woodridge Forest one of the streets caught my attention with numerous houses under construction. I took these photos.

Not too many months ago the land was covered with grass and now workers nail lumber and smooth concrete.

The last time I rode this route was September 17, 2018. I use the same streets for other rides but only bike into Roman Forest on this route. There are a few changes but nothing as drastic as Woodridge Forest.

On the way back from Roman Forest the timing was going to put in the Briar Tree school zone with all of the traffic so I went back to the south bound I-69/US59 service road in Valley Ranch rather than go to Fm 1314. This left two other school zones: Kings Manor and Bear Branch. Both of those the traffic was largely gone by the time I got there. I finished the ride at 3:39 PM.

Average heart rate was 135 (77%) and max was 160 (91%). Power readings: 166 average, 400 max. I built up the overall average speed to 14.1 mph and kept there until the 38 mile point when I started back into Kingwood.

More warm weather on Tuesday and maybe less fog. I plan on riding.

Bikers pedal to benefit disabled athletes

www.news-journal.com

It was far from freezing for the 31st annual Freeze your Fanny bike ride Saturday. The annual Piney Woods ride from Longview is a fundraiser for East Texas Lightnin’, an independent team of athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Saturday’s riders did either 10-, 40- or metric century (62-mile) routes. Longview temperatures were in the mid-50s.

Williamson Creek Trail across South Austin

By cxagent | austinmountainbiking.com

We have been working on a new trail across south Austin to form a loop around Austin that includes south Austin. Yesterday, we met with a neighborhood that backs up to Williamson Creek. I am extremely disappointed at what many of the speakers said. Without going into great detail, the reputation of MTBr’s was really really bad with this group. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought they were talking about an off shoot of the Banditos motorcycle gang.

I found out that we "destroy trees and creeks and kill off the wildlife". We "ride thru in huge groups with our music playing so the neighbors have to put up with that thump thump thump all night long". And "if they allow one trail, then …

First February Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 2, 2019 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 2, 2019

I kept waiting for the temperature to get above 60 degrees and finally the wheels went down at 1:00 PM. For the first ride in February I wanted to ride at least 10% of my 345 mile goal for the month. I chose the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route and rode 36.42 miles, almost 11% which is a good start.

Weather during the bike ride: start 63 (86% humidity), overcast, wind E 8 mph. Finish 68 (79% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Those extra couple of degrees at the start happened while I got dressed. I decided to wear my new Bellwether long sleeve thermal jersey as part of my chill avoiding wardrobe. Photos, front and back.

Bellwether long sleeve thermal jersey
Bellwether thermal long sleeve jersey back

To go along with this new jersey I added a regular long sleeve jersey over top, shorts, leg warmers, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. Until I warmed up around 18 minutes into the ride I felt a little chilly with some prickly skin sensations as the body got use to exercising after several days off. Once I warmed up it didn’t feel quite as cold. I am a temperature wimp.

When I got to the closed bridge on Old Atascocita Road I thought maybe I wouldn’t be able to complete the route but the base asphalt was down and it was strong enough for bike traffic but not vehicles plus the big concrete barriers blocked the road. Photos of the bridge.

After taking the photos I continued riding east to FM 2100 and then to Ramsey Road where I turned around and headed back to Huffman. At Huffman no need for a rest stop so I biked west with the wind at my back most of the way to Atascocita Shores Drive. The clouds thinned somewhat and sunshine warmed the air a little.

Back in Kingwood at Town Center Park a number of sellers manned tents/canopies to show their goods as people walked around. I rode through without any trouble but had to wait several minutes to cross Kingwood Drive. From there it is a little over 2 miles to finish the ride at 3:50 PM.

Average watts: 124, max watts 385. Heart rate average: 135 (77%), max heart rate 157 (90%). The wind wasn’t particularly strong and I tried to keep a steady pace. This route has numerous starts and stops and only a few continuous sections to build up speed and keep it.

The next several days weather will warm up and I plan on taking advantage to ride.
