About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Old Atascocita Road Bridge Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 28, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 28, 2019

The plan for today’s bike ride was to check out the bridge work on Old Atascocita Road at the railroad tracks. I set out at 11:59 AM on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Old Atascocita Road” route. According to a sign I saw back in November the planned conclusion was 1/31/2019 and that is only 3 days away. Maybe the City of Houston was ahead of schedule.

Before leaving on the ride I thought it might be interesting to check the weather for Key West, FL thinking it would be warmer than Kingwood. Wrong. Our weather was going to be 10 degrees warmer at 71 compared to 61 in Key West. So much for dreaming about a warmer place there. Weather during the bike ride: start 68 (58% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. Finish 69 (51% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SW 10. With this weather I lightened up my wardrobe somewhat: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and half finger gloves. Overall I was comfortable but when the wind gusts hit while I was in the shade I felt a little chilly.

When I reached the bridge site this is what I saw.

It looks like once the digging finishes on the sides all that remains is putting asphalt over the dirt and large culvert surrounding it.

The weather changes later tonight and the next several days will be colder likely causing me to remain indoors. So far I have not brought the trainer out of the closet this month.

BY LUKE RANKER | www.star-telegram.com

Balancing Two Large Boxes Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 27, 2019

I got a later start on today’s bike ride after watching the UC Bearcats vs Temple Owls basketball game. Rolling out at 1:51 PM the route was a short one at 16.01 miles biking on Kingwood streets.

Weather during the bike ride: start 65 (51% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 4 mph. Finish 66 (39% humidity), partly cloudy, wind W 6 mph. I dressed much like yesterday with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I hoped it would be warm enough to wear regular gloves but the wind chill made the choice for me.

On the way back home I stopped at the post office to get two mailing boxes. I was about 1 1/2 miles from home and balancing them with my left hand the wind made riding tougher but I made it home without incident finishing the ride at 3:13 PM.

Instead of riding the Canyon Endurace CF SLX I chose the Blue Norcross AL for some variety and also because the Blue is about 7 pounds heavier the workout would be a little harder.

Monday’s weather forecast looks slightly warmer and dry so I plan on riding. Monday night and Tuesday the next cold front arrives.

14 Years Not a Slave to Cars

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.wordpress.com

In what’s become an annual post, now for the fourth year in a row, I am obligated contractually (by Mother Earth) to inform you that I am still carless. Losing my car on January 25, 2005 was not my choice. Continuing to do without one has been. What does it all mean? Well, I mostly bike (4,554 miles in 2018, to be exact). I also walk to get around, though that’s more for exercise, 30′ a day. I have also used the bus, ridden in friends’ cars, and twice last year I borrowed …
