from The Abilene Reporter News

Twenty-seven bicyclists from all walks of life pedaled their way into Winters on Monday afternoon as part of a 4,000-mile journey of a lifetime.

Known as the Texas 4000, the event includes 44 athletes with a passion for people as well as for cycling. No ordinary bike ride, this trek is a fundraiser for cancer research. According to the group’s Web site, each cyclist must raise at least $4,000 to participate. Since the ride started in 2004, it has raised almost $741,000 for cancer research.

Although most of the group, whose ages range from 19 to 26, have University of Texas connections, they had never met before becoming riding partners.

“Emily Bollinger, a sophomore at the University of Texas, and 49 of her newfound friends are taking part in the Texas 4000, a bicycle ride to Alaska. The goal is to raise money for cancer research and awareness of the disease.

The first ride originated with a UT student and a group of friends in 2004.

Since then, sponsors have signed on and applicants for the 50 spots have increased to about 200 annually, Bollinger said.”
